Security for new car - alarms, tracker etc

I am being told that as well as the normal alarm/immobiliser I need a pro-active tracker for my new car. Any thoughts on:

- good quality alarm / chaps to fit it?
- tracker system?

I am in Farnham, Surrey so proximity to there good. I hear Tracker Echo is decent, but not cheap. I also read that I should get it fitted by the manufacturer/their agent rather than some third party. Not had to bother before so any thoughts appreciated.

Jimmy, I insured my clubbie with Aon,,,,,,,usual drive block system, cat 1 alarm and a tracker,,,,,they weren't fussed about the tracker....just cat 1 .

Most insurance companies I called (about 2 months ago when I was about to get my 993) did not require, or offer discounts for, tracker (therefore they obviously think its a waste of time). But I still purchased one because I'd actually prefer to get the car back rather than the insurance company's money. I got the Horizon which has GPS to follow the car but not the system to let you check remotely that it's still where it should be. The Echo is a silly price. The RAC Trackstar has a version with similar features for a lot less.

Tracker has to be fitted by someone they appoint and send out (but you buy from any tracker dealer). I found it an unfriendly process, I'd definately look more at TrackStar if I had to do it again, but if it works I won't have to!

I got a few quotes and given the value of the new car (ie >45/50k) they all wanted a tracker and a pro-active one at that. For me I think waste of cash, but given I want track day cover, a decent price etc on my insurance I seem to be stuck with it. The favourite for me appears to the the Cobra system; it's the same as that fitted to new 911s but without the Porsche badge over the top. I had a lot of Pistonheads feedback and both Tracker and RAC generated a lot of less than glowing customer comments.
