Well I am sure I am opening myself up for a barrage of abuse here, but...............

What does SC stand for?

I have been looking through books and magazines and even reviews about SC's and still I don't have a clue!!

Is it Sport Coupe? I have even been told it stood for 'Super Carrera'.

Feel free to hurl insults my way for being so dence!!

Thanks.

American company. They sell loads of Porsche parts, run forums and have tons of technical notes online. Wayne Dempsey (101 Projects for your Porsche 911 - great book BTW) works there.

Go back to the beginning of the board and the answer was produced here!

Thanks guys and thanks for attaching thr thread to the old pages on the subject.........that really cleared the matter up...........

If anybody asks me I am telling them its a Super Carrera and that's that!

On a different subject: Wife and I are currently debating on trading my beloved Golf V6 4Motion in for a Boxter. Any opinions on the Special Boxter red interior? I would ask the chaps on the Boxter pages, but I am sure I'll get a less bias opinion here!![;)]

What does SC stand for?

It doesn't mean anything in particular. That is the official Porsche AG line. It doesn't matter if you like the answer or not... That is it.
There was, previously, a 356SC and nobody ever tried to hang the 'Super Carrera' tag on that one.

Well I'm quite happy for it to be an SC or a 'Super Carrera', the latter being completely over the top but the current official Porsche line is 'Super Carrera' , here.

I think in the heading 'G SERIES' means 'G SERIES onwards'.

Until you learn how to spell B.O.X.S.T.E.R.....stick with V.W. [;)]

Or try 9.1.1.

He's referring to the first SC's. The 1976-7 Carrera 3.0 has 200bhp but feel free to respond suitably Geoff won't mind he's just trying to wind SC owners up.

did the 3.0 litre carrera have 224hp? or are you refering to the early 180hp models?
[;)]
The 3 litre Carrera was replaced in 1978 by the 180bhp SC. Simple as that unless you call the 240bhp a 'Super Carrera' 188 bhp 'Slieghtly Carrera' and 180 bhp 'Sub Carrera'.

I've no idea where the misinformation of a 240bhp 911SC came from but as this is the SC forum the facts are as most people know.
In 1978 the first SC was built with a 180bhp engine - almost identical to the previous Carrera 3.0 but detuned so it didn't outrun the 928! According to factory sources and indeed mentioned in Paul Frere's '911 Story' most engines regularly achieved 190 bhp on the factory dino's. MY 1980 were credited with 188bhp despite the only change being an increase in compression ratio to 8.6:1 up from 8.5:1. Observers have stated that the increasingly stringent governmental requirements for exact figures to be released forced Porsche to merely give a 'revised' set of figures for the MY 1980 engine. 1981 saw the first real increase in performance to 204bhp and this was the most stock factory cars ever produced. The 3.1 ltr 'Weissach specials' - not to be confused with the Weissach limited edition model - had a bhp figure in the region of 215-230 bhp depending on who you speak to, there were about a 100 made some people may own them but never know it.
Finally in 1984 Porsche constructed the Championship winning Type 954 911 SCRS there are 4 of the 5 'werks' cars still in existence all achieve 290bhp with a race exhaust and 935 Kugelfisher injection. Fifteen homologation road going 911 SCRS s were made each with 255bhp again using Kugelfisher injection but with a road going exhaust. If you find one of these let me know, I want it!
Hope that sets the figures arguement straight.

The figures tell one story but the seat of the pants tells another, there's nothing embarassing about the way these cars go regardless of what anyone thinks of the badge on the bootlid.
