Safari / Off-Road 944

Wow it is dead quiet in here since Christmas, is everyone hibernating?

Roads are terrible around these parts so the 944 is safely tucked up in the garage until it gets dryer and warmer.

Meanwhile I've found myself watching a lot of videos containing 944s (and 924s) modified for light off-roading, I almost see a new project coming if I find a good project vehicle...

Has anyone done this? I see there are two routes to go with the suspension, using standardish suspension (with perhaps modified shocks and springs) and a spacer on the front, or coilovers (looks like GAZ offer the gold coilovers modified for light off-roading and a raised ride-height level).

Brilliant!!
Might inspire a Pothole Special for Oxfordshire's collapsing roads.
However, I have stone guards, clock, and speaker to do while the S2 is SORNED...

Even my X3 is having problems with the potholes in Herefordshire, it's like driving across a battlefield.

My car is still out daily on the frozen, salty, wet and cracked Scottish roads. Not had any issues since I fixed the fuel pump wiring so that explains my quietness! Still haven't bothered fitting my £38 Chinese expansion tank, old one still working fine.

Good point about adjustable coilovers on the rear along with torsion bar in that video. I put Spax coilovers on the rear not long ago and raised the back an inch without moving the torsion bar. I was then able to get the front up an inch by maxing out the GAZ gold fronts, overall I'm still an inch down on standard, but it all worked out perfect for me (was down 2 inches before and that was too low). I feel the back is much better sprung now, more progressive, and better to drive with the combination of torsion bar and coilovers.

As for the GAZ gold, yeah, they would need to make a "safari" version as the highest you can get the fronts is one inch below standard ride height!

Good to hear from your Stuart!

Yes on the GAZ website it says the following for the gold coilover kit for the 944 -

For tarmac and gravel rally cars, the kit can be built with a ride height above original for increased ground clearance and (usually) increased damper stroke for greater wheel travel. Again, you will be able to adjust the height at one end relative to the other to alter handling characteristics.
