S2 starter motor

My starter went erratic (see earlier posts) so I took it off. Solenoid fine, but after 2or3 successful connections , dead.
So try to locate a rebuilt unit. Now the fun starts! No part no in the parts catalogue (was one for a solenoid!) No recognition for the Bosch no on my starter, obviously superseded.
Several websites later the Porsche no is 951 604 102 00 , Bosch 0 001 110 080 (Lucas rebuilt LRS02433) or is it!
the part no also seems to be Porsche 944 604 103 00 Bosch 0 001 110 060 0 (Lucas LRS1613)
And one supplier says that their rebuilt unit is compatible with Bosch ...060 and 080. Still with me?
Now other sites say the 944 no is for the 968 and the 951 no is for the 944 S2!
So I order the part "compatible 060/080". Reasonable price (£130) It arrives and , of course, is not the same! The solenoid is angled differently and the leads won't stretch to fit !!!
I have my original apart & all inside the starter looks good. Plenty of meat on the brushes, commutator in good order, but the remains of a nylon spacer/ washer on the commutator shaft. So I'll turn a bit of nylon up tomorrow & see if that fixes it. Always encouraging to find something
not right. We'll see if that was the problem.
Meanwhile the recon unit goes back.
One LRS1613 found at £ 260!!
Plenty "correct" ones in the States, but it is along way to send back if it's not right!
Any one know a good Bosch rebuilder in Birmingham!

8V use different style starter than 16V versions.

16V starters main shaft is longer compared to 8V starter. You can use same starter on 944 S, 944 S2 & 968 models. On 8V motors 951 starter works with all models. This starter is slimmer. Some 8V models (older ones) have "fat style" starter which won't work on 951 models. 951 have a heat shield near starter and that requires use of slim style starter.

David has the correct Porsche PET number for the 1.7 kw motor, which incidentally is over 2 horse power in english money, his issue seems to be finding the compatible motor from motor factors as I presume that he would rather hang on to his arm and leg to drive the car than use them as currency for a new motor from Porsche. I seem to remember than when the pre engaged mechanism stiffened up on my original starter-motor, a replacement from Porche Centre Reading was in the order of £500. I also have a pet (not PET) theory about recon motors. I am of the belief that the brushes are softer and thus not as long lasting. I know from experience of 190 horsepower dc motors at work that brushes are available in different hardnesses; how else would you explain that an original starter-motor can go on for for so long and the recon motor can pack up after a mere three years? I did source a recon for my turbo from Euro whatsit, as luck would have it my AXgti was hor's de combat due to seized front calipers and I needed to get to work.

Actually David have you tried cleaning the pre-engaging mechanism? Its been a while but I think that was all that was wrong with mine in the end. When i took mine out the pinion wouldn't slide forward. I just didn't have the time or the inclination to clean it all, replace the 20 year old grease install it and find it didn't work. Now I am retired I would definitely go that route first. I seem to remember it has a reduction gear to add to the mix, and remember that many a 911 window regulator woe has been remedied by the same method of removing the old grrease and re-lubricating.

Thanks for the replies! I'm trying the well known way of fixing a problem. Strip it down, clean it, grease it, put it back!
try it tomorrow, see how it goes! Will let you know. Have cleaned the drive, fresh greased the planetary gears.. neat way of multiplying the torque isn't it! and it is much free-er And I remembered it has to be dry not greased!

That didn't work!
I returned the wrong one for credit & took mine to D&R Starters (01902871600) in Wolverhampton who diagnosed a dodgy solenoid ( it turned out to be very rusty inside. They rebuilt the whole unit in 24 hours & gave me a 1 Year guarantee all for £70 (better than £260!)
The 5mm terminal had to be 6mm, so the car lead gad to be modified, no big deal.
Works a treat!!
