S2 Prices?

The following moved from another thread for Bob.....

Hi All,
I'm new to forums as you can tell!
Ive been a PCGB member for years and previously owned a late dash 2.5 Lux.
I'm now looking for a clean FSH S2 and i am not sure what price i should be paying for a 100K example. Looking in Autotrader it 5.5k seems about right.
I know you probably get these questions all the time but I've been out of the market for so long i've lost touch of the prices these great cars are going for.
Can anyone help?

I'm not sure how you start a new thread myself?

I have to agree that it isn't that obvious...... From the 944 Register menu (the one with all the topics listed) click on the "New Post" button. This will create a new thread and you can then define the subject line and make your comments accordingly.

With regards to 944 S2 prices, the magazine 911 & Porsche World is a pretty good indication and seems to have the most extensive list of 944 owned by enthusiasts for sale. There are obviously listings in Porsche Post as well but, in my humble opinion (IMHO) the Porsche Post vendors tend to be a little more optomistic on their prices. In fairness, as PCGB members, their cars may be of better condition generaly and worth the extra value.

Unusually 911&PW is only listing 4 S2 Coupes in their classified section:-

'89 Red 110K £4950
'90 Met Blue £4500
'92 Red 150K £5495
'89 Black 171K £4250

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the Help.
All is clear now!
With regard to 911 porsche world, I do buy it from time to time so i must pick up the latest copy.
The thing with Porsches are that you always pay for the condition not the year, those prices you gave helps to give a ballpark.

Now that I've got one, I should state that the correct price is round about the £10K mark, rising towards £15K over the next five years. [;)]

I think £5.5k bought a good one in the summer but recently the prices seem to have gone up and the same car is now £6,500 from what I can see. You need to be lucky and/or not mind a bit of work or some miles to get cheaper.

While it's right to say condition is worth more than age I'd also say condition and recent history is worth more than low miles. It's easy to clock a 944 and there is absolutely no reason a well looked after high miler won't be at least as good as a comparable example that has been a garage queen, probably better in my experience because sitting around does nothing for brakes, tyres, rubber hoses etc. and people can easily be tempted to skimp on servicing because the car has hardly been used since the last one even though 12 months may have passed.

I agree, as this must value my turbo at 20k+.

Nice investment, jsut need the red braces now[:D]

Seriously though, if you subscibe to 911 & Porsche World (strange title buy the way - I always thought a 911 was a Porsche!) you also get a flier listing all of the "Stop Press" adverts. In the latest one, there's 3 more S2 Cabs (one of which is a staggering £16k!), and 2 more S2 Coupe's (one's £8500 and the other £6250, both '91 and both black)

Welcome to the forum Bob, I hope we can help.

You already know that condition is everything, so thats a great start. When you do start looking, make sure you test quite a few as there really is a world of difference between good and bad. This is why you see S2 advertised from £2k up to around £8k. Sometimes the £8k ones will be rubbish, just because the owner really does not know what an excellent one is like and has just copied similar adverts. Likewise a cheapy can turn out to be a bargain in great condition.

The main thing to watch out for with S2s is that the cam chain and tensioner have recently been replaced. This still catches out the unwary as Porsche never included it in scheduled maintenance, and everyone concentrates on the cam and balance belt , which they did.

I've lost count of the number of times people have faced an expensive rebuild because of camchain issues []. They really should be inspected every 50k miles IMHO, and costs under £300 to change

I've been assured mine are fine, but out of interest is that price for DIY or specialist fit?

'Thanks All' for your much noted advice.
I never expected so much assistance through the forum!
Paul, I was aware of the balancer belts (which i had done on my previous '86 2.5 lux) but the chain & tension is that unique to the 16V head (S2)?
Thanks again.

Yes. Cam belt drives one cam as on an 8V / turbo. The 2nd cam is driven by the first via a chain.

See THIS SITE for a nice visual of it.

Paul - I take it that is chain and "pads" (?) I had heard the tensioner mech should be done too and it was circa £200 (?).

£35 is for the top pad only I believe. That's the one that wears worst but the whole thing i.e. tensioner mechanism, chain and both pads is about £200 and a lot more involved to fit.

Paul
You say check that the cams + chain + tensioners HAVE been replaced....
Thats exactly what i did. As i know of this problem after having the same thing happen to my 968....
The car ive just bought had , had this job done done aprox 18 months / 15000miles ago. After the chain had "let go".....
I also called the garage that did "the job" b4 buying the car to check the "story", + they said , yes they had "fixed" the car.......
BUT
The car has just been into Hartech for a C service + ive been hit for a new camshaft.???????????????

Aparently the garage that did the job " originally" MUST have used second hand bits.[][][][] As the cam that came off the car had DEFO done more than 15000miles of use.....

So to say that im NOT A HAPPY BUNNY would be a "slight" understatement.[][][&o][&o][&o]...

As the car was purchased privately i have no comback....

The car NOW runs like a good un .....Well apart from the starting trouble, see link..

Hope nobody else goes through this sort of misshap.....

I've replaced the cam shafts in both my S2's; one had missing teeth on the sprockets and the other had deteriorating case hardening. I know of an increasing number of people who have also had to replace the cams and I think that is only going to become more common unfortunately.

I kept shtum this time as I don't want to sound like a broken record and nobody else has the same advice but personally I'd extend the "make sure the chain has been checked" to "make sure the shafts have been checked" and by someone who knows what they are looking at.

Thanks to all the guys for the tips.
Now all I need is patients and plenty of cash! to find the right one.

Don't worry Fen, I'll take up the mantle whenever you need a rest. There are still a lot of new buyers unaware of this with the 16V models.

Yes the £35 kit is just the top pad and what I'd consider for the home DIYer. The tensioner itself and bottom pad is a bit more involved. My pad and chain were replaced 50k miles ago and are due for a look next service in April []

I had the timing belt, cam belt and tension roller done in January, £18.50, £24 and £15.50 respectively - the chain makes a slight ticky noise when at idle - i was told that it is fine when it was inspected, and plan for it's replacement next January. Might just get it done this summer to be on the safe side. The chain was replaced 42k miles/30 months ago, many say get it done at 32k mile intervals - i agree but after a few large outlays there had to be compromise somewhere.

Having seen the above posts I now understand why I got so many calls from the UK about my 89 S2 which I was selling in Ireland.

I was selling at mint condition 89 S2 in Guards Red with black leather and sunroof. 98k miles with all the belts done, new tires and fuly serviced...

I was asking 12k euro and to be fair I got more calls from the the UK than from genuine Irish buyers. In the end I sold it privately to the sales manger in the garage I was buying my boxster from. In the end I got 10k euro for it - and no, I dont know what that translates to in real money [;)]

The S2 is a fantastic car and whilst I'll miss it a lot space contraints meant running jst one car.
