Hello,I am about to remove the cams to check to see what is rattling up there, hopefully its a tappet or two and nothing worse.
I have the cam cover off and all looks ok so far.
Any advice on where to go from here and what do i need to look out for as i continue would be of great help.
I am using Clarks garage manual(online) ,or is there a better one?
Best place to buy pads for the chain tensioner?

Thankyou,Tim

Ask Jon Mitchell at JM Garages or Hartech.....experts on this matter and i know JM will give advice free.

The advice you take depends on your ability with the spanners. If you are competent and confident then clarkes or Porsche workshop manual will give all the settings etc you need. I use the Porsche workshop manual on CD and print the pages I need to do the job in hand.I bought my pads from Porsche in Holland but I believe you can get them from Porsche shop or Promax etc.
f your not good with the spanners then find some one who is and get them to help you.If you are not confident on the spanners then I would not recommend trying to refurb a head.

I now have the cams out.
All tappets are stiff to push( they dont move at all with hand pressure)

I have seen a youtube video with similar noise to mine which was found to be valve guides.

Now thinking head off to check this. Rather not but i have to cure the noise

I'd suggest that whilst you're in there....

You whip the head off and then replace the head gasket - on the assumption that it's not been changed for sometime ?

You could also do the belts whilsts you've got it apart - as you'll have to take all four of them (cam, balance, alternator & PAS) to take the cam tower off the head.

Carefully check all the valve springs, I broke a couple on my race car which in itself wouldn't have been too bad but the broken springs caused a bit of valve clatter so I clipped a couple of valves as well. Interestingly I remember talking to Jon M about valve springs several years back but a lot of people seem to have forgotten they age and use harden then randomly snap at high miles/years.

I'm with you on that Neil. But it all comes down to budget, I mean a top end gasket kit is £150 ish from Porsche plus another £80 ish for belts etc and you have all the bits you need to do a good job. Not sure how how much valve springs though.

I have decided to take the head off.
All the tappets seem ok as far as i can tell.
Whats the best way to store the tappets please?

There is a small piece of the top tensioner pad missing,so i need to have a search for that!

Is there a head gasket/top end gasket set that is recommended over any others? Its an s2

I am taking photos as i go and will be changing the belts etc as it would be stupid not to.

Best place to buy/borrow a flywheel lock and cambelt tensioner? Im in Chalfont,Bucks

Thankyou,Tim

Mine is an S2 as well. I bought the kit from Porsche it was around £150 and gives you every seal you need to do a top end rebuild ie Head gasket valve stem oils seals etc.

This is normal. If there is no oil inside them they are soft to push. If you need cheaper replacement ones, certain older Audi lifters can be used.

Head off today, cylinder bore no.2 is scored fairly badly

Can they be rebored?

A difficult question to answer. Ultimately the answer is yes,but most people would say no.
If I was you I would speak to Hartec as if anyone could give you an answer or do it for you then he would be the man.

Stand back and wait for 200 different opinions and the big arguments.

I feel your pain

I had the chain snap on my S2 2 years ago, by the time i got a replacement head, new cams etc should have really just bought a 2nd hand engine, I appreciate there are risks in that but there are ways to make it less of a risk

Price all the options fully before you do anything.

good luck
