I've just collected my magnesium Cup 1s from Steve Turner at TPCS (Turner Powder Coat Services).
Steve is ex-Dymag and specialises in refurbishment of magnesium wheels and other components, and works for many of the leading marque restoration specialists including those dealing with period F1 cars and exotic Ferraris etc with mag wheels - and also directly for Porsche GB.
His process costs around £95 per wheel:
"¢ magnesium-friendly chemical strip
"¢ media blasted and all corrosion/oxidisation removed
"¢ soaked in bright UV dye
"¢ rinsed and dried
"¢ crack tested under UV light (if any cracks are found the the wheels need to be couriered to Ian Jemison to be TIG welded then returned to TPCS)
"¢ chromate sealed (this is the important bit to prevent magnesium oxidising/corroding/bubbling in future)
"¢ powder coated in standard silver then option to clear or metallic clearcoat
At every stage he sends hi-res photographs and reports on condition of the wheels.
Note: any imperfections in the wheels are left during the chromate and powdercoat stages (chromate or powdercoat won't stick properly to anything other than metal, so no filler is used). Customers can then opt to get their own paintshop to fill any imperfections, prep and paint to factory colour. Steve says this is the only way to ensure the wheel is fully stable, sealed and the structure of the wheel remains protected for many years.
I took my wheels there after Jamie Summers recommended. All 4 passed the crack test. There are some slight imperfections visible here and there but the plan is to store them, then in future if they go back onto the car I'll have them properly prepped, flatted and painted in factory silver. Pleased to say the all-important lettering is clearly visible and actually much clearer than when Pristine Wheels painted them a few years ago.
