Rev counter woes

My rev counter on my 911 SC (1983) has decidedto do what it wants, it seems OK on idle but then while driving it just goes anywhere in the range, jumping. Any ideas? Also just noticed the belt is slipping a bit so could it be related?

Could be the belt. Adjust the shims to tighten and if it still does it then the regulator (if you have one) or the alternator is likely to be the fault. Check connections everywhere etc etc first.

Thanks, now seems to be affecting all sorts electrical, the radio has a mind of it's own as well now, I am NO mechanic but ca check connections etc, would someone be so kind as to point me in the right direction???

Hi, Thanks for that, I also have the radio switching on and off now as well!!! will havw to have a look next week now.

I'd start at the battery + & -
Then the ground strap (gearbox to chassis) near the gbox mounting bracket.
Then the starter motor.
Finally the alternator itself (save the hardest 'til last) and if all is well, get a replacement or have it rebuilt by a pro. I have another 911 I could borrow one from [:D]

Do all the previous mentioned first and make sure your car doesn't have an external regulator.

Thanks, just for an update. It now has a radio that switches off and looses power all together (memory loss). Also got a mechanic mate to check the battery power and the alternator has fluctuating voltage towards the battery!

If you have confirmed its not an earth, then like Nathan says its almost certainly the rev counter regulator. If its the internal type then you can send the gauge off for repair. Reap are pretty good.
