Removable roll/harness bar

I have 4 point clip-in harnesses in my car and they attach to eye bolts where the rear seat belt lap straps go. However I'm not overly happy with the angle of the shoulder belts so looked into harness bar options. The Brey Krause on that Porscheshop sell is horrendously expensive for what it is and then I found the Redline bar in the US http://www.redlinerennsport.com/SafeguardPage.html

I like the idea of being able to use it to either wrap the straps around it or use just as a harness guide bar as well as the rollover protection it offers.

Getting one from the states would be a faff on so I am considering getting a local exhaust/roll cage manufacturer to make something similar up but with a couple of tweaks such as stops to prevent the harnesses sliding about (and I don't want to infringe anyone's IP).

I know that the cost of manufacture drops sharply if I pay for a jig to be made up so rather than just get one for myself I wondered if anyone else would be interested in one if I found out potential prices that way it should work out cheaper for everyone?

Let me know if you're interested

An alternative that offers flexibility is an 80 x 60 (minimum) x 3mm square plate with UNF nut welded on the back, drill hole, place behind hole and an eye bolt through and you can fit your harness eye bolts (or bolts) anywhere.

If you cant weld or dont have access to a welder then an assistant holding the nut in place will suffice but a tack weld stops it coming off inadvertantly.

The previous owner of my 968 had a Bray Krause fitted which he bought, I think, direct from LR. Would quite like something similar myself.

The bar in the picture doesnt look confidence inspiring to me, as it omits fix to the top seat belt mount (it looks very 'because racecar'). In fact, it looks to be about as much use as a sh*t on a stick and it might well be a liability in a big off too!

Pete Sherratt had a similar but better bar made here in England. If you contact him he will be able to put you in touch with the people who made it for him. The price was very high for what it was though - about £350 if I recall correctly.

This is his profilce here, with an email address: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/showProfile.asp?memid=8435

If I were you, Id be contacting Martin Short ay Roll Centre Racing and buying a rear cage with an added harness bar. Cheaper and more usefull. If you ask they will not add the lugs for the front cage too, making it more aesthetically pleasing and a damned sight less likely to kill you in a crash!

Simon, care to explain further? The bar in the picture mounts to the reinforced point on the C-pillar and also the reinforced lap attachment point. The Brey Krause bar only attaches to the C-pillar point and seems strong enough so this design looks more than sufficient?

I also like the fact it's not a permanent install so ideal for the odd trackday as much as it would be a good place to mount some harnesses.

It doesnt mount to the B pillar seat belt mount. Speak to Pete Sherratt: he'll be able to get you exactly what you are looking for.

I could get one made that mounted to the B and C pillar as well as the lap belt mounts but I doubt it would be easily removeable. Plus if the welds are sufficient then I don't think the bracing to the B-pillar would be necessary?

I had a factory Matter roll bar that was similar , difference was that it was mounted to the front lower seat belt mount.

You could, but Pete has already got a pattern and a manufacturer.

I had to look a few times to spot that one, lol.

If anyone has any more design ideas before I speak to the fabricators next week then speak up :)

Simon: - I'll drop him a message and try and get some pictures.
