reference pictures needed

Evening all

I need your help guys, could someone with an '86' turbo please post some pictures showing the various heat shields around the block. I have one or two that are proving somewhat problematic and the parts list isn't helping due to some shields not being listed, or at least I can't find them. Perhaps the shields were cut down a little on later cars, makes sense I guess since there was a cost cutting exercise taking place.

There are two 8mm threads on each side of the block towards the rear as shown here just above the oil stick hole, this side I think I have a reasonable crasp of but the other side is a little more vague, I have a plate that has two holes of the correct distance between them but I think there must be another plate that also fits here as all of the bolts I have are two long for securing the one plate. I also have a large heat sheild that has two open slots in it that needs to go somewhere but the distance between then is too small for the holes shown in the picture. Hope I explained that well enough... oh and no I'm not anywhere near close to refitting the engine but theses little items I want to get sorted now that they are all painted.

But one off the shelds sounds simmler 2 the one I found around my starter motor. Not if it could be from there?

Pete,
They support the turbo mount bracket with one bolt (the rear one) but they also take the bracket that supports the inlet manifold, fit the inlet manifold bracket first, then the turbo next, ask me how i know.

Thanks for the input, yes I believe you are correct, also thanks to Rob Wright for his call earlier which cleared a few other things up. Mainly the fact that the turbo downpipe also fits here which would explain why the bolts are too long, I'll need to shorten these as I will not be using the standard downpipe. Plus as you have both pointed out the other shield that I was a little lost with does indeed fit around the starter motor.

Pete,i got that sligthly wrong, fit the inlet manifold support bracket first, then the rear hole also picks up the the support for the flange on the downpipe from the turbo which sits atop the inlet manifold bracket, the bolt will have to go in when the engine is in the car and you are fitting the downpipe.

Evening ! Difficult to get u a photo as I'm at work and the heat shield your asking about is buried under the car !


However, all things being equal u should a largish shield with a distinctive 'slot' in it which attaches to the side of the engine in ur photo. This separates the oil vapor collector and the balance shaft cover from the downpipe. The slot in it provides a route for the oil feed into the top of the turbo from the balance shaft bearing seen in ur photo. The oil thn drains through the turbo into the engine mount and then back into the sump via the large flexi hose and banjo fitment right at the bottom of the picture.

If by any chance u have another small heat shield long and thin about 6 inches by 2 spare, this will be for the other side of the engine to cover the oil level sensor and wire ( small triangular mount just above the sump plug).

Jim I very much doubt that I'll be able to attend Alasdair's trip, although believe me I'd love to, I may be able to make Le Mans 2014 though.. we shall see.

Thanks Chris I think I have it covered now, my car doesn't have the oil level sensor but does have a plate similar to how you describe, I need to recheck the bolts that are thrown into a box as the ones I've found so far are too long for just the one plate on this side, the other is now explained as I had forgotten about the turbo downpipe bracket so I'll cut these two bolts down as they are now too long since the downpipe with it's bracket is now no longer required.

Ahh Frenchy I was up your neck of the woods the other week at Conniston at Water Park having a Lads & Dads weekend with my boy. Sadly the 944 didn't make it due to having a reborn engine with 86 guts but me, the boy and the yaris did see about four 944s during the whole weekend in Cumbria. I was quite impressed albeit that one of them was sorry old chocolate brown wreck at the side of the road on the way to Conniston Water. Maybe you know it ??? Chris I must return your engine support member as soon as I get 5 minutes to scratch my arse mate.

Yes mate I got offered a low milegae 86 lump for very good money that was hard to turn down. So that lump has been been rebuilt and pretty much future proofs the car in two ways. Pretty well no need to touch the engine again and a bloody good forged rod and crank base to support any big number mods if I ever get the inclination or the cash for that in the future.

Pretty well no need to touch the engine again and a bloody good forged rod and crank base to support any big number mods if I ever get the inclination or the cash for that in the future.
