rear sill repair.. any good places to look at for the repair.

Our S2 cab has had a bubble since when we bought it, on the rear sill. I knew it looked like rust and that it was a common area where they do rust.

I am more than capable of the repair but just asking if there any good pics to follow or flow of idea's.

My only worry is matching the stone chip to be honest.. I can blend in the paint.

Also I guess an area of concern is that stone chip protection panel that is stuck on.. I guess I could paint over it but would rather have it off for a new one.

I am going to strip the body kit part of the sills off and steam clean both sides of the car to inspect under there incase it's hiding more..

I don't think it is.. but I will want to check..

I have seen the repair panels on ebay but it looks a simple shape to remake..

I am not going to bodge it I want it right and I want it solid metal.

I have a fair number of rust treatments I can get in there to protect it.. afterwards..

Shame but then it's a 21 years old and well I am not looking as good as I left the factory back in 71 [:D]

The original stonechip was by Wurth and still available, do the whole sill if you want a match, keep us posted.
Jim.

thanks I just seen an artical that said to pop the vent and get a camera down there.. Well I have but being a cab and an S2 I can only get so far..

What I have seen looks good but I want to get in right down deep so going to get the web cam out tomorrow and an LED light to see inside .. I have a key ring camcorder I can also use.. I am hopeful it's just that one area and then steam clean and treat every where else to keep it tip top..

it's to be expected for a car this age at the end of the day..

Jack up the rear and take the wheel off there is a bung leading into the sill, i expect it to be the same on the cab, hope you don't open a tin of worms (Tin Variety) [:)]

I got some photo's and it looked decent but would like to get propper access into there to see more.. but keeping fingers crossed...it's been garaged alot over the years so I am hopeful.

When you say the back of the sill.Is it the sill or the bottom of the rear arch? A photo of the area up close and at a distance would help.

you know that you can get access to the sills via the rubber bungs in the side of the inner sills under the carpet.? You need to remove the seats though.
I read somewhere that you can remove the stone chip guards using a hot air gun or hair dryer .

Hope we can see some pictures ?

all news to me ok I will look again at it.. I have removed the vents on the door shuts but no where else as yet.

looking to buy a scope camera anyway for my 12's and 356 restorations so might wait till that arrives..

I may just repair it for now with new metal and then paint in the winter..

we will see..

pic later for sure. it's in front of the rear wheel lower wheel arch edge
like in this pic this area but not as long as this prob only 10cm's at best with 5cms showing at the mo..

Stone chip guards are a PITA to remove even with a heat gun and a plastic scraper.

In the end I bought an eraser wheel with a drill attachment from eBay for about a fiver. Made loads of mess but worked no problem. A quick polish afterwards and all good ready for new guards to be fitted.

Im not sure how the guy that did mine got it off, but I opted to have it painted after anyway lol

anything like this ? I've kept mine at bay for a couple of years with oil and grease on the inside of the sill but I'm going to have to tackle it as soon as I get a garage next month

nothing like that in anyway

I am looking to cut this out in a min so I will post up..

I have ordered one of those inspection camera's off ebay should be here next week.. so I can have a good look inside the car and my others.. mainly wanted it for my 356 but it's going to come in handy on the 944..

funny I have been looking at buying a 996 and the more I think about it I should just buy another 944 and spend the money keeping it going.. I just fancy a modern turn key car with out issues..

with a VW camper in your stable I can see why you'd want a turn-key motor lol...[:D] those things spend more time going vertically (on the ramp) than horizontally [:(][:(][:D]

not mine [;)]

Rain stopped play as 944 out on the driveway :-(

it is June summer time isn't it?? []

Ok will my enderscope arrived from Ebay today and I got it rigged up on the net book and went out and dived in the sill area and took a look.. it was like diving on a ship wreck !

but all was good.. in fact the inner sills where really good NO rust ! none zip nothing..

How ever that rear corner where the rust is.. has a damp patch now the rain has been falling and I recon that is what has happened water has got into that rear part of the sill and started to rust it out. From the inside out.. So no option but to cut it open.. Lucky that this is localised to here and not the whole sill..

Very good camera £30 off ebay I have a video but it's 2gb long ! well worth the money for any type of project.

I thought that it might be useful for other members to see a short bit of video of the inside of a 944 sills using the endoscope mentioned by 912UK . They are £30.00 delivered off ebay.

My endoscope arrived this morning and I tried it out in between the rain showers.

It takes a few minutes use to get the hang of using it effectively and a couple of things to bare in mind is allowing time for the camera's autofocus mechanism to focus the image clearly . The illuminance of the cameras LED lights can be adjusted and you can take a still image or video at any point by pressing a button on the handset.

The other aspect which takes a bit of thought is trying to keep the endoscope in such an orientation that the images are upright as viewd on the netbook screen or you'll find it difficult to work out which way is up !

You'll need a portable laptop of course and a small netbook is ideal .

OMG some one did what I suggested [:D][:D] For £30 you just can't go wrong that's the cost of an hours labour in repairs.

The camera's are really good for what they are and having used one before I knew they could do it. Just they where still £100 but when i saw they were down to £30 I was straight in there.

I did make a video to put on line but it ended up being 2gb !!!! so you done it now so a job off my list. Just for the peice of mind to know it's good in there is worth the £30 and yours looks good I inspected mind and it was also very good almost too good but no I am happy to know in there with some wax oil it will stay good as well for years to come so any one else buying our car will know it's as good as it left the factory.

how ever it's the other way that I have a hole I am not worried because I can repair this with new metal and again any one wanting to buy one of my car will know it's been done with new metal and not filler and a nice coat of paint. I never do that and any of my cars I have restored to new have had new metal , it's the only way to go .

Here is our S2 cab

I think there is another issue here. I know they all rust here so that's some thing we all know about

But I left the car out in the rain last night and I felt inside the rusty area and It was WET!

so that means the water is coming in from some where else when the car is standing still. Having no where to go it collects in the sill and rots it out in time so I will open it up more the hole and get my camera in there with a hose of water and look to see where it's coming from for others to see..

If not then it's part of the design as all 944's go here.. and I will make holes for water to escape and treat the metal and wax oil the whole area to allow water to run off and exit with out any internal damage.

Seeing this is more a relief for me, as mad as that sounds..but knowing you have a rusty hole only this big is better. Because if your sill is nice and perfect then I am sorry that means your car has in the past had a repair and it's more likely to be filler and paint this means it will come back worse!! so get them camera's in there..

That bit is only a double skin.So a decent welder/fabricator will fix that with fresh netal no problem. It's a really easy repair a couple of hours and then a bit of paint etc and your away.

your rust spot is just a little further back than mine but the same area. I think you are quite right about there being a common water ingress point there somewhere . It could be from the roof gutter drain or the rear quarterlight almost anywhere as its surprising how remote water ingress points can be from the visible damage point.

Ford Transits suffer badly with rust particularly at the drivers and passenger front steps and sills.
It didn't take me long to find that water came off the windscreen and into the gap between the door and screen pillar. it then tracked round the rubber seal until it came in at the bottom of the door.

I have a feeling that this could happen on a 944 and could sometimes be the source of water in the footwells when it isn't from the underbonnet bulkhead drains being blocked.

I'm very tempted to remove the plastic skirts from the bottom of my sills as they are definitely trapping moisture and rusting the bottom of the wings and sills.
