Rear shock compatibilty?

Hi guys,

After my 83' 944 flew through its MOT my friendly MOTer adviced me my rear shocks are looking pretty tired.

I got down in the pit and yes they are really showing sign of age.

Less babbling....my point is, i've seen a pair of rear shocks online from a 1986 944 S2 used but in good nick.

Would these be a direct fit for on to my 83 LUX?

I'd be cautious as they didn't commence sales on the s2 until '89. Have you or they made a typo over '86?

Don't know too much about compatibility but I think the seller is probably referring to the Oval dash when he says 'S2' - the first S2 was released in 1989 so I don't think those shocks can be from an S2. The question would be what changes were made between a square dash lux and an oval dash variant. Sorry this post is not very informative, still learning lots myself, but I am pretty sure your suspension is not setup to receive S2 shocks as direct replacements (i.e. without modification).

Edit - Beaten to it :-D

Cheers guys, that makes alot of sense.

They look like the same shock for a LUX, heres the link

I could get new ones for 150 ish but these fit my "need to try save money" mind set at the mo lol

"Tried & tested". [8|]

They may be okay but I'd suggest you set aside £50 a month over the next couple of months and just buy new. It's a hit or a miss - you may find they have more miles on them than your existing ones! It wouldn't be funny if you changed them over and the MOT tester made the same remark next year. [:D]

It would be different if the seller said they came off a car after only 20k use and the receipt is with them!

rear suspension is a bit different ,they will not fit . You need shocks for the early lux up to '85.
Like mentioned by others don't try your luck with used shocks ,you will just waste your money.
£61 a piece is pretty cheap and well worth it http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/pt385_391_-cma81-cmo123/Porsche/944-1982-91/Shock-Absorbers-Rear/

Itll mean 'series two', no doubt. The 'S' in 944S2 refers to Super; this being the second Super model that they made.

Yeah you guys are right, for the amount of work to change them over i'm being silly trying to take such a risky short cut.

The gaz ones seem a good option and the bilstiens are very cheap.

Thanks for the advice, hopefully order a set soon and then search online for a fitting guide lol

Fitting is very simple 1 bolt top 1bolt bottom each side. soak with WD40 etc for a week first and get some good strong kit.
