Rear light problems?

Hi all

Just noticed a problem with my rear lights. The main lights don't work - side lights, fog lights, reversing lights all work at the back, but not the main ones. I checked the bulbs and they look fine. I looked for a fuse problem, but couldn't find a fuse listed for the main rear lights at all(?). Front lights (main and dip) all work fine.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? (I searched but couldn't find anything about this on here). Should I have a rear light fuse? To make it slightly more inconvenient, I'm not at home at the moment so don't have access to the workshop manual, a multimeter or many tools!

Cheers,

Giles

Hi Giles
Do the front side (parking) lights work?
They are on the same fuse (40) I think.
I'm at home with manuals if you want to call - 07811 944 953
Cheers

I think it would be worth checking the earthling as in my experience lighting problems more often than not can be a result of a poor earth.

All the rear cluster has one common earth, separate on each side, so I would not be looking there for this problem

What do you mean by "main lights"?

If the side lights, fog lights, reversing lights all work at the back, then that only leaves the brake lights and the indicators doesn't it?

I know I've just got back from the pub - am I missing something here?

Thanks for the replies, all - especially the offer of phone based support [:)] Yes, the front sidelights are working and fuse 40 is OK.

Busy weekend (wedding in Kent) but just got back home, and managed to have a peer at the car in daylight earlier today. When I said the "main" rear lights, I was under the impression that when I switch on sidelights, one square of red lights come on at each side at the back. This still happens. I also thought that when I switched on the dipped headlights, that same panel glowed a brigher red (twin filament bulbs?) This doesn't happen, but now I'm not totally sure that it ever did! I also thought that the fog lights were two squares of red lights on either side at the back, but this now only works on the left. (Perhaps I jinxed it by saying they were working earlier []). Finally, the outermost single red square on each side at the back are the brake lights. These still work on both sides.

Could someone please save me from the onset of early onset idiocy and tell me whether I just imagined brighter red lights when switching from sidelights to headlights? Or is something not working?

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Um, good news!

You just imagined that, so they are not broken after all!!

Thanks Graham.

Guess that means I only need to fix the right hand rear fog light, but on the other hand it means I may have a screw loose upstairs! I'd better not attempt fixing the fog light until I've recovered from the wedding... [&:]
