Has anyone experience of remapping the ECU chip ? is it worth it,any benefits ? who is recommended ?
Just considering for my 1991 S2.

Thanks

Do a search on here - I did a long post on the Promax S2 chip a couple of years ago. (Summary: Worth it.)

Oli.

I've never remapped an S2 so can't comment.

However......

The last run of the S2's were known as SE's in an attempt to sell them - they were fully loaded with AC etc, AND were remapped by the Factory to put out 225bhp = ~ 7% more power than the standard cars. So with the right chip/map, filter, possibly MAF unit and exhaust I'd be surprised if you can't get ~ 230bhp from a non-blue printed or flowed head S2 ?

Thoughts or comments from the S2 group ?

I think just about any S2 owner who has gone down this road have achieved the sort of gain Chris mentions as a max but with a much smoother delivery of power up across the range. They tend to buy off the shelf chips from various suppliers rather than go down the whole individual remapping route. Would not thought the expense of that option would justify the gains whereas an off the shelf chip is relatively cheap and good value for the (albeit limited) gains they offer.

The topic has been discussed here several times, but I'd re-iterate that the chip isn't about power figures; it's about mid-range torque, which it does rather well. I'd be very surprised if you couldn't get 230bhp from a good S2 lump (Promax claim more than this I think with their chip, having seen one car with it fitted getting some very good figures), but a BHP figure is a bit meaningless. The big gains are smoothness and torque, with ensuing mid-range flexibility, making for a significantly brisker car to drive. (Prior to fitting the chip I'd not uncommonly end up with the car jammed on the limit in 2nd and third, shouting at it to go faster. Post chip-fitting this hasn't happened once.)

I didn't realise you'd fitted a turbo at the same time... [:D]

I would second everything said . My car was Promax chipped and the thing just flies. It will pick up strongly from 1000rpm and not stop accelerating to way past 5500rpm ( never gone higher except by accident)
The important thing to note is that this engine delivers power right through that band evenly. There is no sudden surge of power or tailing off . Because of this the engine doesn't seem to have the speed and aggressive acceleration that other cars seem to have .

BUT this is deceptive. The S2 just delivers the power quietly , evenly without fuss and as everything else falls away behind you , you realise just how quick it is. My understanding is that the 944S2 isn't so much a sports car but more of a GT grand tourer and as such the gear ratios and transmission has been designed accordingly.

if you are looking for a 'peaky' screamer you've definitly chosen the wrong engine.

I would agree with the previous comment I fitted a Promax chip to my 1991 S2 and although I doubt the power increase was significant (never had it checked so can't tell) the real improvement is how the car delivers the power it has, much smoother and pulls like a train from really low down to right up at the red end. In fact the only time it has gone into the red zone it was in 5th and the speedo was reading over 150mph (obviously on a closed road!!). Not noticed any downsides to fitting it and no difference on mpg still averages around 25-27mpg general round town mixed stuff.

Intersting comments , I am considering a chip because the power doesn't really kick in until about 3000rpm and really sharp at 4000rpm when on cam.I hope it will make the power more even across the rev range.I had a 350z for 5 years and the engine power deliver was superb across the rev range.I hope to get a similar benefit.

Thanks for all your replies.

Sorry to hijack, but I was looking at doing a live remap by Wayne at Chip Wizards I think it was but I can't find his website or anything else of his - is he still going?

This is always interesting, as I've no idea whether my S2 has a chip or not. As there's no reference to it in the service history I assume not when asked.

I guess I need to have a ride in an un-chipped S2 for comparison. Mine has no noticeable "peak" to the power, just pulls through the rev range very smoothly. Maybe it's just comparing it to the "s", which I had a good long drive in and really does have a torque curve that's either on or off, and needs to be kept above a certain point to be going anywhere at all. [8|]

If I felt the need to do anything to an S2, it would only be a de-cat and a chip from Promax. Their chip has been around for a long time, and I've never heard of any complaints. Can't see how spending far more on a custom re-map could get you anything as good.

Before I changed the chip in my S2 the car pulled smoothly from low revs but had a definite power band at around 4000rpm when it really came on song that seems to have gone now after the chip and the car pulls more smoothly but also faster through the earlier part of the rev range. Think it may have something to do with the original chip mapping having to be made to restrict mixture and fueling to suit emission laws below and up to 3000rpm but not sure. I do know the car was much improved by fitting the chip and I got it un-used 2nd hand from a PCGB/TIPEC member for £50 so a real bargain, I have also fitted a KN panel filter but more to save on maintenance rather than performance, yet to de-cat the car but when the exhaust goes that will be the next item.

I had my 968 done by Wayne, and yes he is still going. Whilst a live re-map is the best and Wayne is top drawer at re-mapping I chose a Promax chip for my S2. If you are only going to use your car on the road and the odd track day then the Promax chip is very good and you can spend the £200 you save on petrol and have fun.

If you have modified your car, port & polish etc then Wayne is your man.

Alex. I second all that PJS has just said.
Have you checked your PM box.??
