re greasing

hello guys..when my car was mot,d last the mechanic said the wheel bearings needed changing or re greasing...he wasnt sure if it could be done on a 944..(re greasing that is ) and didnt want the job anyway haha,,,does anyone know if it can or should be done and any idea how much replacing or re greasing would cost?..and if its an on the drive easy fix...

Front or rear?
Early cars fronts can be adjusted and regreased, not sure about the later oval dash cars.
On all versions the rears would need replacing - I did mine on the drive on the square dash, again not sure about the later ones.

I think all the fronts (all ages of car) can be dismantled, re-greased and then re-tightened correctly. If they are worn (or loose) then replacing and re-tightening them will considerably improve the steering feel.

Rear ones are sealed things and can only be replaced - but there is no point in changing them unless they are worn (in which case it would fail an MOT). Replacing them is a fairly big job as the hub nut needs to be done up to about a gazillion Ft/Lb, and I think the old bearing needs to be pressed out and the new one pressed in.

thanks guys...not an easy or cheapish job then haha...back into the porsche account i dive haha,,,bloody thing is becoming more expensive than the alpha gtv i had before,,,,enough said i think youll agree....gotta love the way her arse end twitches out on roundabouts though...worth every penny...

About the rear bearings - my 924 Haynes manual describes the process for removing and repacking the rear wheel bearings. Even refers to a maintenance schedule for this job although it cannot be found in the Haynes book [:D]

I'd go with the rest here that the rears a sealed bearings and need to be replaced rather than serviced if for no other reason than the labor required to remove and replace them will be much more than the price of new bearings. If you can and will do it yourself - you can find out if the bearings are serviceable by looking for rear bearings and seals on Pelican parts, etc. and seeing what is offered.

If you want to change out the bearings - either the whole bearing (if sealed) or the outer races (if serviceable like the fronts) will need to be pressed into the rear carrier and then the stub axle re-installed. This is where the gazillion ft/lbs of torque come in.

Fronts can be done on all models. Rears are seald type. Low cost replacement for rears are BMW E28/E34 units.

Olli,

Any chance of you putting this (with a little more detail, if you have any) on the Alternative Parts Fitment list? And also put on anything else you may know of; you have a lot of information which could be really helpful in saving other 944 owners some serious cash.

Thanks.

IIRC its around 350 ft/lb and when I had mine torqued up at JZM having done the rest of the work myself I had to sit in the car with handbrake on and my foot on the brake pedal as the two mechanics pulling on a 5 foot bar on the torque wrench meant the torque pulled the car along on the shiney workshop floor []

I worked out the weight needed on a 6 foot scaffold tube was about 60 lbs and then gave it some, drove to JZM and it wasnt close [&:]

Note that the nut is one use only, replace it - dont re-use it.

front wheel bearings are an easy job to strip clean repack and adjust or if there is a little play just pop the cap off and adjust up where are you im in edinburgh if i can help
