re-con Gearbox needed

Hello there,

I am in need of replacing my existing gearbox as the syncros have gone. (First and third have gone with it!!!). I am looking at buying a re-con gearbox but don't know where to go to buy one.

I have gained another problem which involves blue smoke. When the car gets above 3000 RPM you get a puff of blue smoke when you change gear and the same when you change down in gears. If you drive the car below these RPM they is no problem and performance is sound. But I have been advised that I have a cracked head. Would this cause the car to smoke like this as I am completely stumped because the piston compression is good and the tappets and valves have just been adjusted??? HELP

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Kind regards

Tim

Tim you'll just have to keep looking for a recon box, they are thin on the ground, the problem with buying such a 'box is unless you have an invoice detailing recent repairs it's an unknown quantity. I would think about repairing yours, get about three quotes from Porsche gearbox builders. Budget for between £1000-£2000 plus engine in and out. If you don't have luck finding one here try the PCGB HQ or the Heritage forum. As to the cracked cylinder head I would say that was hard to diagnose without stripping the engine. Far more likely if it is blowing out oil on and off throttle to be the valves. Does the engine pull hard still or does it feel wooly and when did you last have the valves adjusted and the mixture checked?

The Porsche Shop - birmingham, do an exchange box offer.
The smoke could also be 2 other things to check.
1/ Fuel mixture? Running rich above a certain RPM.
2/ Oil type/viscosity? or/also the oil is thin due to dilution from the incorect mixture. Is the air cleaner element clean?
Bones- how do you check the mixture on these babes?
check it out.

The only way to accurately do this is to put it on a Sun diagnostic or similar device. If you have a good starting point however and you want to experiment with richening the mixture for instance ( I don't advise weakening it) take a note of where the mixture screw is rotated to currently (looking from the fan it's located on the left side of the CIS near the throttle stop, it's a big screw with a spring behind it) and go from there. I have a relationship with my service people in that I can just ring up and have one of the guys tweak the mixture or timing if I think the edge has gone of the tuning, it takes five minutes.

Hi There,

Thanks for the response. I will look into the gearbox idea. I had the mixtures set up but they was not much difference with the smoking but that doesn't matter any more I have diagnosed the problem it is a cracked head, its cracked between the valve seats, My local garage has quoted me about £60 + VAT to repair, which I thought was not too bad.

I must say though it was fun getting the engine and gearbox out of the car and are not looking forward to putting it back in!!!

It's all in a days work though and part of the fun.

Once again thanks for the response

Tim

Ah I see you've been on flat-6.net too Tim, so you know about Van Zweeden. Sounds like the head repair is being done for a very reasonable price if you live near London let me know who does the welding for you.

Yeah I know about Van Zweeden now, thanks for that. I'm afraid that I am a bit of a distance from London though; I am from soggy west Yorkshire (Bingley)

Cheers
