"Rasping" vibration noise from behind passenger shoulder area! help!

Hi all, first of all a big hello from me a new member in the Co Durham area(got my 1st Porsche,a BoxsterS this month) has anybody had the same noise as descibed above ie a "rasping" vibration noise from behind passenger shoulder area of the car This mostly happens at v slow speed ie 13-20 mph not at high speed, I have had it back to OPC JCT600 and they have looked in engine bay/ Roof padding area with no success ,so folks anybody else had same problem! it driving me crazy!!

i couln't be something simple like the head rest of the seat rubbing on the rol bar could it?

I've started getting the same thing, it only happens when the car is travelling at slow speeds, usually when I'm reversing out of my garage. I think it is when the engine's vibration frequency coincides with the natural frequency of a loose panel or something in the car. I guess you just have to fiddle with all the panels, and parts until it stops. I'll give it a try next week and tell you how I go.

Welcome! The rasping noise co-inciding with very specific revs happened to me (in my case the rev range was either a constant 2500 ish or accelerating through that range on very light throttle openings). It transpired that the exhaust heat shield had come adrift and was rattling.

It wasn't a big issue in the grand scheme of things (read the link to hear the full miserly of my experience!!) so hopefully you're motor will be as right as rain before long.

My cat heat shields were a bit rattly when i first bought mine, if you look up underneath at the exhaust (both sides) and give it a bang with the palm of your hand you should be able to hear a loose sheild, mine was attached but just needed bending away from the cat to stop it resonating.

Thanks for the research Helen! I had that problem too, more of a clanging sound, but thats not the same as the rasping sound I get from inside the car!

WOW great service from this forum, just wish OPC staff were as good! never mind they have now offer me anothor look see with their "top man "of 20 years experiance to inspect it in the new year will let you all know! anyway keep you ideas coming as I will hand them all over to my POC when they look at it! ta again all,

UPDATE! I have located problem(sort of) I half opened roof stuck my hand underneath all the workings and wrapped cloth around the roof strutts/ open /close pistons which are near to the bodywork, this has stopped the noise AND lets me now show OPC where to go to tighten up/ pad out metalwork to get rid of noise permanatly! so I,ve now treated her to a full Autoglym Resin Polishand Extra Gloss polish, lovely, just in time for Christmas, have a good one all!
