question about my fuel sender

I cleaned up my fuel sender the other day and when I took it apart I managed to split a rubber ring/flange that covered the square holes at the top of the sender. I know everything is on a car for a reason but I'm wondering what the purpose of this is and I'm inclined to think I should be able to live without? I don't see it listed on the diagram.
 
I don't know what its function is either, but unless someone can assure you otherwise I'd not be happy to refit the sender without it. It's an electrical device operating in a tank full of fuel and fuel vapour after all. As you say, it must have a purpose.
 
Thanks Steve - it doesn't help that it's not listed (or I would have bought a replacement already).. Might have been fitted by someone other than Porsche? Anyone here who has taken their sender out and able to say whether the rubber ring is standard?
