PSM fault?

Hello,
I own a 996 c4s 1st registered May 2004. I have owned the car since Dec 2014, and it has been generally trouble free since then. However today I took it for a drive and stopped about 3 miles away at a garden centre. On restart whilst leaving I discovered that the brake pedal went almost full travel with degraded brake effect. I got out of the car to see if there was any brake fluid on the ground but no obvious signs of leaks. Checking the brake fluid reservoir showed that the level was about an inch below minimum. I drove the car home carefully, happily very light traffic. There are some brakes, but the pedal was still going to the floor with light resistance. Also, there was by now a yellow 'PSM fail drive to workshop' warning and a red 'Low brake fluid' warning coming up on dashboard.

Having got home, I checked the fuse for ABS/PSM and that was good. The brake fluid level was also above the minimum level marker on the reservoir, but the warnings remained and the brake pedal still goes to the floor. Not sure what to do now. I am a PCGB member and would appreciate any help you could give as to what is going on etc.

I intend to contact the garage that look after the car on Monday, but before then would like to know if there is anything I can do/check in the meanwhile. They do seem like hard faults as leaving the car 10 mins and restarting the car has not cleared any faults.

Best regards,

Gary Dawson.

Just saw your post today. I have experienced the loss of pedal pressure and fluid with no obvious leak. Discovered the link pipe on the bottom of one rear caliper was leaking. Fluid pooled in the wheel rim, not on the ground. Dispersed while driving.

Gary,

Very odd that the brake fluid level recovered to above minimum after your drive home. Clearly there’s a leak somewhere; or maybe an ABS unit problem??‍♂️

Clearly there’s a serious issue with the braking system making it inadvisable to drive the car and hopefully now it’s been transferred to your preferred repairer for a full inspection and diagnostic check.

It could be air in the brake fluid, I had something similar happen with my 996 although not to the same extent

Have you changed you brake fluid every TWO years
Get your garage to do a Fuid Change and check the brake lines
Dont expect the worse Start with the simple
Top the Fluid up Bur if it was below the level it WILL have go air in the system
