Protecting rears of arches from chips (and then rust...) - mud flaps?

Gravel being flung up from the tyres has chipped away the paint at the back of my 944’s wheel arches (the corner tips at the front, and the horizontal lip at the rear). Clearly they’re vulnerable, as every time I wash the car I pull out a load of stones that have gathered behind the arches (probably scooped up on my frequent B-road blasts).
A friend suggested fitting mud flaps, something that I initially wasn’t keen on. I am warming to the idea though, if it protects the aforementioned areas – they’d have to look period correct though. Looking online hasn’t uncovered too much. Does anyone have them fitted to their 944, or have you seen one with them? I’m also interested in other measures taken to protect the areas in question.
Cheers.

I honestly can’t understand why porsche added that horizontal channel at the bottom of the rear arch.
It always gets full of crud.
when I did my repairs I filled the channel with epoxy metal so water and gravel just runs off, then epoxy plus stone chip coating haven’t tested it yet but I have high hopes
