Problem with tyre Cayenne Turbo

dawmac

New member
I purchased Cayenne from Porsche Cambridge about three months ago. I made 3000 miles and today I discovered they the rear driver tyre i.e. very worn on the inner edge .
Please, can you let me know what could cause this damage? The rest of the tyre is not worn, just the inner edge.
I would like to know what happened as we would like to avoid the same damage on the new tyre :(

Hi David

I was told by the guy that sold me mine that these cars do wear tyres more on the inside but yours are very worn heavily all over anyway, not just on the inside edge.

I guess the inner wear is probably due to the air suspension and the heavy weight of the car anyway but I couldn't be sure.

Looks like you need a full set of new ones though. I had to replace all of mine as it's not wise to only replace one or two especially as it's 4 when drive.

Bought mine for £1000 fitted. Pirelli P Zeros.

Probably not what you wanted to hear but with a car like that, the tyres really need to be decent.

Geometry not properly aligned (pretty much >90% of Porsche's are misaligned from the factory) OR this could be doing it perhaps...

Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus)
Fitted as standard, Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) offers variable distribution of engine torque to the rear wheels and electronically controlled rear differential. PTV Plus also optimises steering response and precision by applying brake pressure to the left or right rear wheel.

I have PTV on my KN which is down at the tyre dealership right now as I had a slow flat that couldn't be repaired. When I pick up the car I will look at the wear on the inner side of the old tyres and let you know.

I do know the wear on the outer side of the front tyres has been very high. I am getting to check the alignment too because of this.

Too much toe-out, mate. I would imagine the vehicle's hit a pothole or something and pushed the wheel out.

Get your dealer to check and replace any damaged suspension components and give it a full geo alignment. [;)]

Clive.

I bought this car in 03.2014 from Porsche Cambridge and after one week I change wheels and tyres for winter. Afret one month I change wheels and tyres from winter 20" on summer 21" in Porsche Colchester 2.5 months ago and summer tyres was like new. After about 1000 - 1500 miles one back tyres is like on pictures, second is like new. I will be tomorrow in Porsche services because I think something is wrong with the car and if I have waranty and it is porsche foul why I need pay about £300 for one tyre.
I had BMW X5M, 650Ci and it is normall that back tyres are finish very fast but two tyres look the same.

Not PTV - almost certainly wheel alignment in which case. Something that Porsche are not responsible for.

I agree, most likely wheel alignment and very difficult to pin on dealer, but even so, worth speaking to dealer and asking for a goodwill gesture/contribution to costs of correction. Wouldn't wheel alignment be part of the famous Porsche dealer used car pre-sale checks? Worth David following up!

Graeme,

I don't recall a full geometry check being included in the Porsche 111-point check.

Also, it seems that David had the tyres refitted having been running on winter tyres for a month, so anything could have happened during that period. I wonder if the winter tyres suffered the same fate?

Under the circumstances, I think the best he can expect is for Cambridge PC to carry out a discounted geometry check and adjustment (if required).

Jeff

I pay for geometry £250 in Porsche and I bought tyres > £880 michelin 2953521 and £80 for fitting.

David,
It sounds like you do need to have a chat to the dealer, but the problem here is that a pothole or kerb 100m from the workshop can undo any of the geometry work done and after the passage of time in your case, difficult to pin on a fault of the dealer. But I would still have a word!

Having said that, an object lesson in checking tyres regularly!

Graeme
