Pre-'85 Alternator

Hi guys.

The alternator in my '83 Lux has packed up. Tried to find a exchange/replacement, but no-one in the UK seems to have one in stock. A few parts people are willing to ship one in from Germany, including Porsche themselves for over £500! Any chance any other cars use the same part so I can widen my search?

Alternatively, post-'85 alternators seem to be a bit more common - could I fit one? I've got mine out now and they seem be physically similar in size with similar mounting bolts as far as I can tell from photos? Although obviously the later ones are higher rated (115a v 90a) - a good thing, no?

The third solution is to get mine refurbished, although this isn't ideal either as in the meantime I'm driving around without one, topping up the battery overnight and in fear of being stranded! Still, may not have a choice - any reasonably priced recommendations?

A later one wont fit, the bolt holes are different sizes and the bracket spacings are different and the pulleys dont line up and have a wider belt!

Why don't you get it refurbed that way you will have a good one should the second hand unit ever fail. After all it is probably as old as the broken one you have now [:)] Not that I am against using second hand but there is always a gambloe involved.
 
Design 911 have them for £159 +vat however it is the same as that on the 924S which from memory was a Bosch unit from an Audi so you could always try the Bosch part number if you can find it on the old one, or like has been said get it re-conditioned then you know what you have.
 
Design 911 didn't actually have any in stock.
Yep, might take your advice and get the old one refurbished as a backup.

Series two alternators will fit. The only difference is that they have a six groove drive belt pulley. You can either use them as they are or (with a little difficulty) swap the pulley over.

My series one car has one fitted Mike. I didnt do it myself though, so I can only speculate that holes were reamed out, etc...
 
The one on the "new" engine only put out about 12v so I tried to put the one on from the "old" but couldn't get it to fit, so just swapped the brushes / regulator.
 
if its just the brushes and/or the regulator its very easy to refurb yourself. If the bearing or commutators are shot then its probably a shop job. I would look at part numbers for any of the Mercedes, VW Golf ,Audi cars of the same period . Chances are the same alternator was used on several cars at the time, like everything else

I agree ...............it just needs a little ingenuity and research .......its a shame that we seem to have lost the ability to find alternative solutions these days. If its not available off the shelf we are not interested.

I used to love nothing better than spending a day at the local Cross Keys breakers ferriting out parts from other vehicles that I could modify /alter make fit my old classics .I've just found a seat base this morning out of a Rav4 to fit a Toyota Lucidia captains seat in my Transit Campervan! ! and only £5.00 .

Personally I would select a comparable alternator and modify adapt pulley/brackets etc to fit. Its not rocket science for crissakes. I couldn't care a toss about originality myself. My car is 23 years old .....I doubt there is anything original left on any of our cars . [:(]
 
I'm sure they could be made to fit, I would have just used a 5 ridge belt but the pulleys dont line up line, the alternator sits too far forward so rather than mod mounting / bracket etc I guessed the regulator was faulty so swapped them.
I do have a spare early alternator for recon if anybody is interested. Was working fine but has no regulator!
 
Right, 2 months on, and I still don't have a working alternator! Not had any luck with 2nd hand jobs 'fraid and it doesn't seem to be the regulator...

So can anyone recommend anyone (reasonably priced!) to refurb mine?

I now empathise with electric car drivers that have to charge up every night and have "range anxiety"! [&:]
 
What makes you think its not the regulator?
Its the bit that gives the most regular problems, often the brushes/contacts anything over about half worn can give problems and the bridge diodes can break down.
