How easy is it to refurb these? Has anyone done this before? If so are there kits available and where from? May it just be easier to exchange the rack for a refurbished one?

These guys have a seal kit but didn't see any slipper blocks or other parts - so if you rack is just leaking but otherwise ok this might do for you.

Just buy parts from your local parts store. Use BMW E30/E36 seals. At least here in Finland i can buy them very cheap, about 20€/kit. Porsche does not sell any kits. Most kits available are made of BMW parts.....

Oi! Finish your engine first!

Oli the rack has to come off to drop the sump off so might be one of those while you are in there jobs. I think I may be formulating a cunning plan though [;)]

Changing seals is rather easy job to do. When you have rack off the car it is about one evenings job to do for a first timer. Just clean it properly before you start to putting it to parts. Take lot of pictures, so you can be sure new seal goes to right places. If there is wornout metal parts, like toothed saft, no seal kit would give you help.

Yeah I spoke to them today actually and they have them on the shelf. Actually I am trying to blag a deal with with them as I have a load of used stuff that I have taken off during the last few years that are just ripe for refurb. Surely an aircon compressor, an AFM and a K26/6 with a knackered compressor wheel plus my old PAS rack must be worth a free exchange for a new PAS rack??? Still waiting for a call back [&:]

Ahh, sorry. Got my racks and pumps mixed up. Is it possible to refurb a rack? I would have thought not.

Of course they can. I did it few years ago. Got parts from my local BMW store. Seals were about 20€

I did mine. US kits are for LHD racks - not all seals are common with RHD.

The key is to find a good quality kit, try here.

Just take your time and be very careful not to damage any of the ground surfaces when removing seals.

Yes mate I have enquired bout shipping a kit from America as they are only $74 USD but then it did dawn on me that it would be left hand drive. Haven't asked about wheter they can supply RHD yet. I might try the BMW E30/E36 route. Funds are limited at the minute due to the engine rebuild and I just can't afford the price that Porsche Shop want for the kit. Failing that given that I now know how easy it is to liberate the rack I may just clean and refit for now. It still works OK but I am convinced that there would be benfit in a refurb.
