Power Steering

I would be grateful if anyone could give me advice regarding my power steering as I find myself on unfamiliar ground.

I am only familiar with shonky old torsion bar 911s so I’m unsure how assisted my 996 should be. The first quarter turn is pretty light and easy but after that it gets harder. I’m a pretty big and strong (and fat ??) fellow, but I’m really having to grapple with the wheel on roundabouts and that can’t be right?

No untoward noises or visible leaks.

It definitely doesn't sound right. The 996 power steering isn't as light as modern electric systems, but there is no way you should be struggling on roundabouts. The obvious thing to check is that there is fluid in the reservoir. If so, I would suggest taking it to a specialist.

I'd agree, mine's very light, check belt and fluid level first.

The car's putting very little weight on the front wheels, i haven't heard of a pump failing, yet!

Also check your front tyre pressures. Due to the lack of weight on the front, they don't always look low on pressure even when well below spec. Is there anything non standard about the front wheel / tyre set-up ? Eg wider tyres, increased wheel offset, wheel spacers or camber / caster changes ?

Completely standard with Turbo look 18”s. I believe that it is system related rather than being passive mechanical, because it is easy when low tyre pressures or similar would make it heavy, and heavy when a car without PS would be light.

A delight on a car park, but at a brisker pace it is very similar to the artificial centring that a BX 16v had, intended to add a sporty feel to what was otherwise massively over-assisted steering. It is difficult to overcome the resistance that isn’t present at slower speeds.

I presume that the PS filler is in the boot and not under the bonnet? 😁
