Power steering hoses

Anyone replaced them? I have a slow leak I've spotted, however clips look ok. I think the rubber hoses are going porous with age. I've cleaned them up as best I can to get a closer look however I'm sure it's seeping down and spotting under the valance and wheel arch in the drivers side. Best place for replacement parts anyone?

Pirtek are always meant to be very good for hoses. I've never used them for that, but have for other things, and the service I have received has always been excellent.

On that basis, I'd recommend them.

One of mine went porous - couldn't work it out foe ages! The hose isn't special except that at least one of them as a different diameter each end.

Oh and do it or the fluid will make the ARB bush swell really badly!

Hi,

In 1997 I had a local hydraulic firm remake the hose that runs under the sump to the rack and back. The hose was about £200 at the OPC I had it remade for £20. It's been no bother since.

The end fitting were specials, not available through the hydraulics firm. So they removed the low spec leaking cotton braided hose and replaced it with a nylon braided version and re-swaged the end fitting to it.

They commented that such fitting were designed for around 200Bar and that power steering systems operate at much lower pressures, so there would be no issues with re-swaged fittings leaking. Fifteen years later, and it appears that they were correct.

Any local hydraulic pipe makers such as Pirtek will do it for you.

Made me flexible brake lines too - exactly to my spec.
 
Thanks... There is a Pirtek near me. Do they supply only, or fit like a garage would? Will probs just give them a ring...
 
Before your rush off and have new pipes made up (which could well be the solution), I would check that all the connections are tight and that it's not the power steering pump cooler (square loop located behind the front bumper within the wheel arch liner) that's fractured.

There's a join between this on the return line which mounts on the drivers chassis rail with a jubiliee clip - it allows the system to be broken apart to get access to oil pipes etc.

If it definitely is one of the high pressure hoses, as said by all Pirtek or some other local Hydraulic manufacturer will readily do the job - take off the relevant hose and let them use it as mould to fabricate a new one.
 
Forgot to mention that the pipe that feeds the pump from the reservoir is notorious for weeping, check that first. Its not under pressure so shouldnt be damp with oil.

The actual pressure pipes themselves are a simple connection both ends. A bit fiddly but DIY doable.

The steering system is self bleeding (ie: simply top up with engine running and lock to lock to bleed it) so if you have a few spanners its not a big job.

Equally, its not a big job for a local mechanic who would probably be glad of the work.
