Porsche 996 - A PSE factory-style controller for aftermarket valved exhausts that remembers the last switch position

I bought a DesignTek valved exhaust for my 2005 996 C4S and, although I was very pleased with the exhaust itself, I was disappointed that the valves were operated using a separate remote control.

I found this quite awkward to use while driving. I wanted something that worked in the same way as the original Porsche PSE system, using the PSE button in the centre console.

I looked into using the Porsche PSE relay, but at £267.08 it seemed a rather expensive solution for what is, essentially, a small addition to the car. So I decided to design my own.

After quite a bit of development, testing and refinement, I've produced a small controller PCB with its own wiring harness, which replaces the RF remote control and allows the aftermarket vacuum valves to be operated from the genuine Porsche PSE button.

The controller sits neatly in the space behind the PSE switch, keeping everything hidden and retaining a factory-style appearance.

Features

  • Integrates directly with the genuine Porsche PSE centre console switch.
  • Eliminates the need for the separate RF remote.
  • Remembers the last valve position and restores it when the car is started.
  • Automatically recovers following power loss or battery disconnection.
  • Provides OEM-style operation with discreet LED feedback.
  • Compatible with most aftermarket remote-controlled vacuum valve systems — tested with DesignTek.
  • (Note: Does not have the speed-related quietening input (Yet!))

Installation

The installation is relatively straightforward and requires only basic tools.
You need:
  • An original Porsche PSE button - 99661398810A05 (mat Black) for RHS of the centre console horseshoe. (I bought my PSE button directly from Porsche, but unfortunately they won't let me buy any more, so the kit doesn't include the button.
A spare switch position in the centre console.
Basic hand tools, including a "spudger" to remove the Horseshoe.
Spade connectors if you are not using the standard solenoid connector.
  • Tap connector if you're not happy with the method I used to attach the lighting circuit :)
The wiring consists of:
  • +12V accessory-switched supply via a piggyback fuse.
  • Ground connection near the fuse box.
  • Dash lighting connection for button illumination.
  • Connection to the vacuum solenoid.
The solenoid control wiring is routed along the transmission tunnel or down the sill and into the engine bay. I've allowed enough cable to route it along the transmission tunnel to the solenoid, but it may go down the sill

I'll provide illustrated installation instructions with the kit.

I have three kits available; if anyone is interested, or would like to discuss compatibility with their particular exhaust/valve setup, please send me a PM. I haven't decided on a price yet, other than it will be around £70, which is much cheaper than the Porsche relay.

Happy to answer any questions; just PM me

This is an enthusiast-designed product and is not manufactured, endorsed or approved by Porsche AG.
I'm not an electrical engineer, but the system has been thoroughly tested.

Testing carried out

  • Tested valve open/closed operation using the original Porsche PSE button.
  • Tested correct operation through multiple ignition on/off cycles.
  • Tested that the controller remembers the last valve state after the ignition is switched off.
  • Tested restoration of the valve state following battery/power disconnection.
  • Tested operation with the DesignTek vacuum solenoid.
  • Tested the controller's 12V power supply and switching circuitry.
  • Tested operation of the PSE button illumination.
  • Tested the controller with the engine running and the vehicle's normal electrical system operating.
  • Tested repeated switching of the valves to check reliability and consistent operation.
  • Tested the installation and cable routing in the 996 centre console and transmission tunnel.
  • Checked that the controller remains isolated behind the PSE switch.
  • Checked that the system does not interfere with the normal operation of other vehicle systems.
  • Tested recovery following loss and restoration of vehicle power.
  • Carried out extended road testing to confirm reliable operation under normal driving conditions.
I'd also add one important qualification: Testing has been carried out on my own 2005 996 C4S with a DesignTek valved exhaust system. Compatibility with other aftermarket exhaust/solenoid systems has not necessarily been verified.

Installation is undertaken entirely at the owner's risk, and compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, vehicle construction requirements and exhaust/noise regulations remains the responsibility of the vehicle owner and installer.

The controller functions solely as an interface to an existing aftermarket exhaust valve system and does not alter the engine management or emissions systems.
