Remembering this before even the 944 was released, had a turbo charged Porsche 944 engine, a 944 turbo prototype if ever I saw one.

I doubt it's for sale though as last time I saw it was at the Porsche museum, unless there is more than 1?

Edd

The only thing that was '944' about this was the cam cover! Still, Porsche 924 Carrera GTP would take pride of place in my garage.

Disagree Simon, at least two of the gtp's had the new 944 turbo engine, I read it at the museum in black ink....

Edd

Indeed they did, but they were called 924CGTP when entered. The engine had little in common with a 951 engine too, with a twin belt driven cam 16v cylinder head. The 944 nomenclature was for marketing purposes and I think that we can be too quick to embrace it because we own 944s.

My love of 944s is equalled by my love of 924s! [:D]

Camcover looks more 16v then 8v

Are the modle numbers in order off creatation? 944 was designed b4 949?

Still an engine with a lot more iin common with the later 944 block than the 924 2l lump.

Edd

It has a 944 2.5l block, the first ever racing application of Motronic, and a bespoke cylinder head - so yes, certainly more 944 than 24 in the engine dept.

The rest of the chassis is also significantly different to the 924 GTR - uprated in most areas to deal with the higher output.

The car for sale is 005 - the test and development car. 006 resides in the Porsche museum and will likely be never sold. That summarises all the 949s ever built.

006 running at a show.

I want this car so much it's almost aching.

I was all over 006 when visiting the museum but they would not remove the hood ;(

Great videos, would love to see that at Le Mans Classic one day (although just a tad too new for current LMC classification).

I think it will happen. Let's hope Porsche Klassik have enough spare engine parts to keep both cars running.

Excellent idea for a group buy, you get to drive for a day every 41 years. It would be just my luck that it's MOT test was due on my day, not sure if I'm gonna last that long for my second day!

Cheers,

Lol, I'd expect it to turn up for my 97th birthday. [&:]

Oooh! Well I've got my £13 ready.

Jonny, is this an original or the one Freisinger built from parts that you posted some while back?

Graham, it is effectively an original in all aspects bar the livery, as the 005 car never raced in its full type-949 guise but was the factory test mule (so technicaly it should really be plain white).

The other car you refer to was a type-939 or 924GTR - the final one of the customer racing cars built with the 2.0l 8v engine ~375hp.

The 949 on was designed for ~500-550hp from its 2.5l 16v all aluminium engine with twin ballancer shafts and Motronic. The car ran uprated suspension arms, titanium driveshafts and a new transaxle with the gear housings located behind the rear axle lline (like the Audi 016). Sadly le-mans spec reliability proved hard to acheive with the open-deck 944 cylinder block, and the race car 006 ran at between 410 and 510hp.

Confusion is understandable as Porsche AG decided to name the 949 as a '924GTP' at the '81 LeMans. This was because, at the time of race entry (early '81), details of the forthcomming 944 production model had not yet been released to the press, so the perhaps more appropriate '944GTP' name was held back.

Days after the '81 race the news of the new model was announced at the Frankfurt motorshow.
