They're great...I looked around a while back to see if the films are available on DVD but no luck so far. Someone at BF Goodridge must have the original? Anyway, it's a great story, and they were placed well in 1980 and 1981 too. Am I right in saying the 1982 cars had a 944 based engine?

Not sure, the 1982 cars were privateers afaik, there were two cars with 16v 2.5l engines that had '944 Le Mans' on the rocker cover 924-005 and 924-006. Apparently with a unique turbo charged engine that Porsche only made 4-5 of, however it did have some similarity to the later 944 engine, with balance shafts, 16 valves and 2.5l displacement, married with 924GTR running gear. Porsche intended originally to enter the car as a 944 GTP but as the model hadnt been put on sale yet the rules at the time did not allow it so it remained a 924GTP.

It appears that most of the subsequent 944 models can trace design and development back to the cars that raced at Le Mans.
