Porsche & 911 World - May issue

The May issue of Porsche & 911 World has two articles on the 944. One a comparison of £5k Porsches - 944 S2 vs Boxster. Given the 944 is at Autofarm and the Boxster is at RPM Technik, I'd hazard a guess they're a tad more than £5k. or am i being cynical? Anyway they said that at that price level they'd probably go for the 944, primarily down to build quality.

The other article is on Augment Automotive and their new ECU. Haven't read that one yet, just about to have a peruse now.

The problem with the Boxster is that the image is too much for many. A shame as (even as a 944 fan) the Boxster is a very well balanced car with an inviting interior. I guess that a 944 can be cheaper to run than a Boxster as well.

Which image do you mean? I am not sure anyone looks twice at a Boxster these days. They are such a common sight on the road.

The 944, on the other hand, is becoming quite rare. I haven't driven mine in a while before yesterday when I trundled around the M25 on the way home. I'd forgotten how many people go by straining their necks to get a good look at the car. The 944 is such a "happy" car. People's reactions to it are nearly always positive and friendly these days. People often come up to me to ask about it or tell me that they used to have one and really loved it.

GlennS I agree with you, the 944 attracts admiring, not scornful looks.

But it was not always that way.

I bought my 944 in 1997. Back then it was likely to get what I'd call a scornful look. It was almost a current model in those days, where as now its definitely viewed as a classic. I think everyone gets a good feeling when they see a classic, even if its not their cup of tea. I guess we all have a sentimental side.

New models, or at least those models perceived to be new, don't get that nostalgic reaction.

well speaking as a boxster and 944 owner...

if I wanted a convertible I'd buy a boxster, if I wanted a coupe I'd buy a 944. The flat six noise is lovely though, and the 3.2 is a fair bit quicker than an s2.

Like others, I find I get many admiring comments on my S2. Several blokes mooned over her at the Anglesey track day I did last month. No one notices my 996!
