Porsche 718 build slot

Hi everyone,
As I've only posted on the forum a couple of times I'll give you all a quick background on my situation.
I ordered a Porsche Cayman 718 on 03/10/2016 from the Porsche Centre Exeter dealership.
I was hoping this would be an ample amount of time to take delivery before the 1st April 2017 to avoid the new vehicle tax rates but I had a phone call from the dealership on 22/12/2016 explaining they still hadn't received a build slot for my vehicle yet.
I must admit I was a little disappointed with this situation but to be fair to them they did offer me another vehicle available to be picked up immediately. Unfortunately it was not entirely to my taste, I'll post images of it below.
The offer was also a good 8-9k more than my order but I'm sure I could have haggled the price down a bit considering it's not exactly to my taste. Anyway I wanted to update you all and hear from anyone else that may have been or is in a similar situation to me.

Hi Shan,

Judging from posts on this and other forums Cayman slots are in short supply. More so with the S.

I placed an order in early May for a 718s and took delivery at end of November , this was only due to being pushed up the list by a cancelled or rescheduled order from another customer.

Did you discuss the lead time with the dealer when you placed the order?

It looks like you have two choices either go for the stock car offered by the dealer, which you have said is 8-9k above your budget. At this price you could get a nicely specced 718s, if that's what you wanted and were prepared to wait and bear the additional Road tax.

As it is a new model and bearing in mind the supply situation I would not anticipate the dealer to be very flexible on price.

Other choice is to wait for exactly what you want and suck up the Road tax increase, I think the increase would be around £800 initially and £310 per annum additional RFL. There is also a possible price increase from the manufacturer to factor in.

If it's any consolaction it's a position that a number Cayman customers are facing.

Having waited seven months I can say the wait is worth it.

Hey Neil,

Yeah before I ordered the car they said the lead time was around 4-6 months for a new build.

I'm ok with waiting a little longer for the car I have specified as it's part of the magic. It also gives me a chance to save a little more money towards a trip I plan to take in the Cayman. (Hopefully I get it before July [:-])

The only thing I'd be tempted to do (Come March) is see if I can get a Cayman GTS for around the same price as the car I have specified but even then I'd struggle to turn down the experience of taking delivery of a brand new Porsche.

If I were you, I'd go for the new car. You will get exactly what you want spec wise.

Thus far, I've no regrets about taking delivery last week of my new 718 CS PDK. It's looking good thus far.

Though I've seen it often enough before, the ability of Porsche to turn a £40k car into a £60k car using the options list still makes me wince. To charge nearly £3k EXTRA for 20 inch wheels painted platinum is outrageous.

Agree that some of the options listed on a £48k car should be already included, e.g..DAB radio, park assist, folding mirrors, sat nav, etc, etc.

My 20" wheels which are both wider, and coincidentally colour matched to suit my colour choice were £1550, not £3k.

Better value than optional colour paint at £1800 IMO.

I ordered mine in November and have ben told May-july for delivery and that was the same story in 5 different Porsche centres.I would wait to get the car you ordered because if something is missing from your personal spec it will always annoy you.I think Porsche have been caught out with the demand for the new Cayman , I am mr secondhand but it is such good value i decided to push the boat out.

As a new 718 CS PDK owner, you won't regret it. The car drives great and the engine note grows on you after a time.

Before deciding to place an order for my 718, I also flirted with buying a used 981 GTS for similar money. Glad I didn't.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I received an email yesterday stating that my official build slot is for April and should be ready for me to pick up around the middle of May.

I'm extremely glad to be getting it before Goodwood Festival of speed and the Silverstone national event.

The quotation posted by Dreo shows £2295 for 20in wheels, plus £615 for platinum colour, making a total of £2910.

Quite so Allan.

The 20" alloys upgrade with wheel paint option on the 2.0 Cayman are expensive at £3k. I omitted to realise that the car in question was the 982 2.0 Cayman.

I was quoting the cost of upgrading to the wider 20" Carrera Sport alloys on my Cayman S. These particular wheels are not available with a choice of colour option and come at £1550 over and above the cost of the standard 19" alloys as fitted to the stock 982 Cayman S.

I hope this clarifies.

I disagree, I think build slots have been restricted in the UK due to the Euro/Pound exchange rate making the cars less profitable for Porsche.

Well, got fed up of waiting only one month after putting down my deposit (plus the uncertainty of how long a factory order will take) so bought the demo car I test drove and loved back in November. Reg'd Sep 16 with only 2k on the clock and £9k+ of options (mostly what I would of spec'd) she's a beauty & I'm really pleased, only had her a week but already covered nearly 500 miles as this is my 'one car does all' daily driver & weekend blaster...

Got a great deal on my trade-in (virtually private sale money without the hassle) as long as I did the deal before the end of the year! Will report back on how things are going as the miles (& smiles) pile on

Good job Fudgie, looks fantastic. I'm now feeling the impatience you must of had only a month after you put your deposit down. I'll be interested to know your thoughts on the characteristics of your car, what you like and what you don't like further into your ownership.

Evening all, well I've not got long so a more in depth report will follow later this week, but after 2 weeks and 800 miles of mixed driving / use (from motorway munching to dads taxi) in all weathers, mines not so lucky to be as pampered as yours Brian - see photo, I'm loving the 718 and no regrets in my purchase or skipping the queue and going for the demo car.

Thanks for the positive comments I was a little unsure on the Guards Red (& still am a little regarding how it will wear the miles compared to metallic?), total concur with your other post Brian in defence of our choice, definitely more than a golf (or S3...!).
