Popped Water Hose

Evening Chaps

Just came back from shops there, narrowly avoiding killing my suicidal cat, parked up, got out, and POP! The fat hose that comes off the water pump let go. Big tear on it visible from above and possibly the moon! Red coolant everywhere.

Had a quick check, the hose is I believe standard on all 944's, 944 106 237 07. Hope Martin can confirm and give me a price! Also was thinking, is OPC still closed for parts?

That being the case, a: anybody any idea when they open again? and b: any kind chap got a new/decent used one they could sell? No car till I get one. [:(]

Hi Stuart, if not open yet, ( I bope they are) you could try design911 and other indie's...they often give you prices for both OEM and aftermarket...some of these companies have remained open throughout.

Dealers should be open again from yesterday mate. PS antifreeze is very sweet and very poisonous to cats. Give 5 and I will get a part number for Turbo.
 
Thanks Pete. Put a post on spares listing thread as well. Will try usual suspects plus the bay of fleas.

Thanks Rob. Is Scotland same as England for car dealers? We are about 2 weeks behind on lockdown relaxation.

Good point about Scotland V England mate. If Scotland not open just order it from England. I get all of my parts posted from Leicester OPC.

Will check it out. That part number is for expansion tank to crossover hose. I need the one that comes off the water pump at the thermostat. Big fat end. PET suggests just the one pipe for all 944's, 944 106 237 07 it would seem?

Thanks Martin. So mine is a turbo, and number 23 from image for 4451 looks like the hose on my car, 951 106 237 04. And if I look at the 4452 pic, image 12 has a slightly different looking hose, but the part number on PET i'm looking at is also 951 106 237 04? Anyway it seems I need 951 106 237 04. Have you got a price Martin?

think the difference is the extra layer of protection on the hose, and the turbo, S2 and 968 have a bigger rad


 
Yeah the hose on mine has the extra protection layer, funnily enough it split before the extra protection! That price is bonkers, URO in the states listing them for about £15, then again the part number is correct on their site but the image doesn't have the extra protection? What was the pre-update price out of interest?

Will look about and see what I can find.

Thanks Martin. I've ordered one from VW Heritage. £23 delivered, next day delivery. They usually sell decent stuff. For what it's worth the image on Amazon was 100% identical to the image on the VW Heritage eBay listing. If you look close you can see what looks like a slim extra protective layer in the middle. Maybe not as pronounced as the one on my original hose. Anyway happy to have a pop at that price from a reasonably trusty source.

Next question! Can it be done from above or is it an undertray off affair?

Depends on your deft touch, it’s getting to the clip on the rad, you might have to remove the fans to reach it, then it might well be facing downwards

think it’s a tray off job
 
Thanks Martin. Thought that may be the case. Not had the tray off for about a year, I suppose it's time once again!!
 
hi stuart, if you have a 1/4 " drive and few different extensions and a one of those swivel joint bits you should be fine from the top just depends on the angle of your jubely head if you can get into it. i had same problem last year done it from top no probs with few different extensions, but i am a bit of a hudiney when it comes to awkward angles. at least you have time to take a look at the jubilee access while your part arrives ??

mine was a sighn something was up i thought it was just old but it turns out to be combustion gas entering the water gaket which cuased mine to pop. Martin probably remembers me telling him ?
heads still off and the investigation continuous on.

hopefully yours is just that it’s old. ??
 
Thanks Dan. The thought did cross my mind, no other hoses look bloated that I had a quick look at. It's 160k miles and 31 years old, plus I have a habit of squishing it to check the water level as my expansion tank is a tad clouded over! Hoping it's just a simple case of the hose giving up. You never know though! I do have all those things you mention. If it's dry tomorrow night I'll have a bash at removing it from the top and see how we go. I did manage to refit the alternator ducting pipe from below. That involved a lot of knuckles, extensions, dexterity and will power!

My HG was done about 45k miles ago and it was running fine, temps fine and no water leaks when the hose popped. Fingers crossed. I did notice after I fixed my last water leak, coolant elbow seal, that the system held pressure a bit longer than it used to after switch off. I had attributed that to a leak free coolant system. Would still be slightly pressurised next morning after switch off. Is that normal? I am slightly concerned now! [8|]
