Pop /backfire on gearchange

Now that the roads are sometimes clean and dry, and one's speed might creep up just a little, I have noticed a single backfire / pop when lifting off to change up at full throttle above 5500 revs on my standard NA 2.7. Can't say I have noticed it before - anyone else experienced it? Not a problem, unless it happens to be a sign of some imminent issue under the bonnet. Comments appreciated!

I had this a few times from my 2.7. I had the Promax chip in it and it was running quite rich at the top of the rev range so just unburnt fuel in the exhaust.

Thanks for that detail - the exhaust was de-catted on the production line and no sign of an O2 sensor. Plug chop looked good with textbook pale brown electrodes; and it's better slightly rich at the top end rather than too weak.

My old 2.5 Lux used to pop on gear change, a mate who was following me one day said it shoots a 5' flame out the back, looked good but must of been over fueling like crazy.

Yours could be a sign of a vac leak or a bad plug/lead not burning all the fuel in one cylinder if its just started doing it.
