poor running problems got worse today !

After last weeks problem of very poor running when hot - missing , staling at idle , very rich (sooty plugs petrol smell from exhaust ) it has run fine after I swapped plugs for clean ones.Today started fine this morning and while it was idling while I swapped vehicles about it just cut out while still cold.Restarted and ran very rough , rich etc again.Left it and this afternoon swapped plugs whcih were very sooty and fuel wet , started fine left to warm up and after a few minutes it just stopped, as if ignition had been turned off - no rough running.Tried to restart fired ok but just died immediateley,Would run at revs but only 2 or 3 cylinders - plugs wet with fuel and sooty again.Swapped DME but no difference , I have recently replaced DME temp sensor as a matter of course. So I have a variable fuelling/FUEL PRESSUE problem.I suspect sticking FPR ? anything else I should check before getting a new one ?[:D]

Thanks for any ideas.

Off chance - is the lead to the dme temp sensor properly on?

If its the FPR, the pressure must be massive to cause it to be that bad.

I had a Lancia HPE with the same injection system 25 years ago which had the FPR give up and that would run rough, but not drown the plugs, and that was measured at up to 7 Bar.

OK, simple stuff but that sounds like too much fuel.

So ... air flow meter? Or fuel pressure regulator? (Assuming you are confident that the temp sensor is OK.)

If I was you I'd be taking the AFM out, taking the lid off it and looking at the tracks carefully, as well as making sure that the barn door swings freely.

Oli.

ETA: Or borrow a known-good item. Any other S2 owners near you? I'd offer to help, but I notice you claim to be in Ripon, and I'd rather not drive up there (and you'renot going to drive down here for reasons already discussed!)

Thanks for that Oli , yep from Ripon in good old North Yorkshire. Will try and borrow ! a good FPR and check out AFM.
