Plastic Liquid Filled Cylinder in Battery Compartment?

Thought I'd check the battery compartment in my 1987 (so it's at the back!) Lux for water/rust/dead hamsters. Found none of the above . . . . but . . . WHAT is the opaque approx 3" plastic cylinder behind the battery?

Bears the slogan "Attention. Only batteries with common gas vents to be fitted!", and part number 945.611.601.00. It is approximately one third full of stuff that doesn't quite look like water. Presumably absorbs Hydrogen?

Can I leave it out or will I, as my favourite movie puts it: " . . experience some slight turbulence and then explode"?

Can't help with your question I'm afraid (my Lux doesn't have that cylinder, at least I've never seen it while rooting around in the boot) but just had to say, great film! [:D]

My old 2.7 had that, I assumed the same as you (for the Hydrogen) because it's in the passenger compartment. My turbo (built 3mths after the 2.7) doesn't. Could have been removed by a previous owner but I've never been blown up or died a fiery death (yet) and I smoke in the car so you should be fine [;)]

Thanks Sandspider and Riverside . . . can't see that "liquid x" would be able to absord much Hydrogen if it's been absorbing Hydrogen for twenty-four years . . . so will do without it.

If it all goes horribly wrong in a Hindenberg sort-of-way I'll come back Gene Hunt style for revenge!

Or else.........!!!

breathing hydrochloric acid fumes in the cabin is not pleasant [:'(]

Early cars with batteries under the bonnet don't have the same problem.
