Persistant annoying clonk - the cure

Hi All,

Thought I'd share this with the board in case anyone else has a similar problem, and it's taught me to think more laterally when dealing with noises !

For quite some time now I've had a clonking sound which seemed to be coming from the nearside rear of the car, it would happen when going over bumps when turning right or sometimes straight ahead [] It went in to my local garage twice and despite the owner, me and the mot tester getting underneath with pry bars, torches etc, we couldn't identify the source of the noise............until 10 days ago when the garage owner suggest I bring it in again on a quiet saturday afternoon for another more detailed look.

After about 10mins of studying all the bushes and joints underneath, the mot tester spotted a problem with the nearside FRONT antiroll bar bush ! The AR bar seemed too low on the nearside and on closer examination, the bush was worn enough so that the bar, under the right conditions, would come in contact with the steering rod !!

I was a bit skeptical as the sound seemed to be coming from the back, but guided by his advice I ordered a complete AR bush set from design911 for £49 delivered ( left out the drop links as mine were ok and they would have added another £70 to the bill [>:] )

They were fitted today and what a difference, no clonks or rattles or creaks and she seems a bit more precise when cornering as well.

I'm now well chuffed[;)], another job crossed off the list

It is amazing the difference, I did all the bushes at the front on mine, plus wishbones and ball joints - you think your car is well sorted until you put some new bits on it!

Know what you mean Andy, sometimes the difference is noticeable sometimes less so, I think the main thing is the satisfaction in getting something else sorted.

I still have a short list of the outstanding jobs on mine including....

Oil Change
Respray door mirror backs ( badly stone chipped )
Sort out cracking paint around edge of sunroof
Sort out water leak into rear passenger footwell ( thought I'd sorted this earlier this year - apparently not :( )
Put enough miles on clock to have new belts retensioned[:D]
