Parking Sensor damage

The parking sensors were not working on our Macan E.
When it went in for the software update we asked them to fix under warranty.
Unfortunately they found that one of the front sensors had been damaged by a stone. Cost £1000 to fix not under warranty.
It's a bumper off job, so that's where the cost is, unfortunately probably not a DIY job.
Has anyone got any ideas for protecting the sensors? ,the front ones seem very vulnerable.
 
I suspect that this cost may include painting the sensor and also re-calibrating the ADAS if the bumper is disturbed or has to come off. It seems there is no such thing as a 'little knock' any more.
 
There was no little knock or damage anywhere else. No paintwork needed.
The mark on the sensor from the stone chip was barely visible.
