Hi folks

I have a guards red '89 2.7 and want to buy touch up paint. On ebay there is 'auto paint direct' offering various numbers of paint. Which is my correct choice? Also, is this a good product?

Many thanks in advance

IIRC Guards red is code no. L M3A, if I was you I'd get touch up paint directly from OEM or Porscheshop, granted their not cheap but they are the correct colour.

As ever I would recommend auto Paint of St helens. They even matched zermatt when others failed and the price and service are spot on. They have always been excelent.

I think you will find it's actually " india red " they stopped using gaurds red in the early 70's

Early 80's it was guards red then for some reason renamed India red as Colin rightly states, however both colours have the same paint code and known generally as Guards Red.

The colour code is the same, so the colour is the same.

The real name (in German) is and always has been 'Indishrot' which translates to Indian Red. In the English-speaking markets this was called Guards Red, although Porsche did mess about and call it Indian Red for some model years.

Regardless of the code, lol, the chances are that your paint isn't going to be the original red after decades in the sun.

I've been thinking the same, as my badge panel and HL covers weren't laquered when resprayed, hence looking like they've been wire-wooled over four years. Should I go to a bodyshop and get paint made up to match the rest of the car? It's an easy job to do a temporary respray myself, but only if the colour is right.

In a word "yes", touch up sticks are ok for stone chips but when it comes to spraying larger areas get a bodyshop to match it for you. Last time I needed a damaged area fixed my bodyshop sent my fuel cap so the paint could be mixed to match it using a spectral analyser (forgot real name).

Hi guys

It's usually best to remove the filler cap and take it into a paint/bodyshop supplier along with the code... They will check against the code and tint the paint to suit if necessary.

I usually buy some base coat in the lowest qty available just so I have some handy for small chips etc. 250ml is usually around £12.

You can paint it directly on to touch up chips!

Try Hex Holdings, the branch in Leicester were very good although I think they have gone now! I use a place called European Motor Factors but they are only in LE and NG as far as I am aware.

Hope this helps :)

I'll tell you a story.Man walks into our garage and asks the painter if he could paint the bonnet and front wing of his car. Painter says yes no problem.Man says I want to make sure that you can match the colour as I have spent alot of time and money on my car.Painter says no problem just tell me wich one of the seven different shades of you colour would you like me to match it to.

Moral of the story is our cars are all old and most have had bits of paint work done and over time the colours all fade at a different rate.If you go to a good professional body shop they will have about 50 shades of each colour code on swatches. Now to me they all look the same but to a good painter they look as different as chalk and cheese. So if you want the colour matched then give the body shop a chance and take a piece of body close to the bit you want painted and they will get you a good match either with a scanner of by using swatches of colour samples.

Hi, I've just done some repair work on my car which is Guards or India red and bought my paint from Autopaints and the match is perfect,I am very pleased, also a good price and very quick service.
