Osram nightbreakers vs O. N Plus?

Hi all

Was vaguely thinking of upgrading my headlight H4 bulbs with Nighbreakers or similar, and today I got an e-mail from ECP offering the Nightbreakers at £9.60 a pack of two. But, they're also offering Nightbreaker Plus at £18 a pack. So, firstly, if anyone wants standard Nightbreaker bulbs, they're on offer at ECP. And secondly, are the Nightbreaker Plus significantly better than Nightbreaker originals? (They claim the Plus bulbs last longer than the original Nightbreakers, but it would be nice to know if this is actually the case...)

Thanks.

I personslly have a serious issue with nightbreakers they can blow very quickly and for me i choose silver star bulbs instead.
They are currently 12 pounds a pair from autobulbsdirect and seem a goid compramise between price/brightness/longevity.
I havnt used the plus, from memory i could never get much of a deal on them.

Regards mas

I bought some Nightbreakers and Phillips Extreme at the same time, the nightbreakers lasted about 9 months and the phillips are still going strong some 2.5 years later.

Blimey ! Thats good for any bulb. Is that in your daily driver or a low miles car ?
I do know i go through lots of rear bulbs just through livi g down a bumpy track. Those little filaments dont like being shaken :)

I found that the Philips Extreme bulbs last alot longer than the Osrams too.

Infact, any time a take a failed bulb out of any of my cars, they seem to be Osrams!

Hi Mas

Daily driver, covered about 20k miles in that time over all sorts of terrain! Hope i've not jinxed them, it's dark here already tonight!

There are often underlying causes to premature bulb failure, wiring, fixtures and fittings, earths etc. or i suppose could just be duff bulbs!

I have some unbranded-dunno-what's in my car and they have been there for over 3 years. Maybe 4 years now. Higher wattage than they should be (show use only, ossifer!) and driven off some relays. Think they were a fiver a pair from eBay.

I personally can't see the point in fussing around with bulbs of the same wattage; they are not going to be any significantly brighter than any other bulb of the same wattage because they are of the same wattage (funnily enough!) If you want more light you need brighter bulbs. (And yes, I have seen the reviews of the various Silver Stars and Nightbreakers and whatnot but they just don't compare with more watts!)

Sorry, but I have to disagree. Personal experience (not reviews) on both my cars has shown OSRAM NightBreakers to be significantly better than "standard" bulbs at the same wattage.

Oh yes, they are better than 'standard' bulbs - without a doubt. But the benefit pales into insignificance compared to a higher wattage bulb.

(In fact, I'd suggest that improving the bulbs is not addressing the greatest weakness in the lighting system as the voltage delivered through the standard loom will be little more than 10v. 'Standard' bulbs with a nice chunky cable delivering a solid 13.7v to them, switched through some additional relays, would out-perform Nightbreakers on the standard loom.)

But thats a faff and a pain, I think the Phillips Extreme work just fine so no need for fancy looms and relays and things I dont understand! Fit + Forget - Done

root cause not the symptom, difficult to ignore 15% of the volts not getting there

I agree Oli

I thought my reflectors were not great, obtained some replacements, and when I had a prod the silvering was all that was holding the reflector together!

The modern nightbreaker / extreme etc bulbs DO produce more light from the same current draw, no question.

Can I blow my own trumpet a little and suggest that people look at this link:

Blimey! This is almost as contentious as asking about which oil I should use!

I don't really want to faff around with relays, and in fact, my current headlight bulbs came with the car over 4 years ago, and have never needed to be replaced - maybe I should leave them be! They're not super bright, but they're not terrible either.

Can anyone comment on NB original vs NB plus?

Plus are better. Theyre all crap on 9 volts though, and extra light is worth little if the lamp itself is in a poor condition. Special bulbs are the cherry on the cake - the cake is good wiring and fresh lamps.

When you say fresh lamps Simon, I'm guessing you aren't referring to the things we (incorrectly) call 'bulbs' but rather the things they mount in with slightly shipped glass at the front and a not-that-reflective-anymore silvered parabola behind. And are those the two things that go wrong with them (damaged glass and lack of shinyness)?
