Options wanted for water pump and sump kit upgrade.

My 944t is currently with JMG having some engine work done. (Long story, will share when I have a little more time.)

The car will return with a few goodies fitted. I.e. 72lbs injectors, MAF kit, cone filter, intercooler, new chips, new head gasket, new (used) block, fuel pump, 3bar fpr, tail dpw, new hoses amongst other things. All belts, seals and gaskets will be replaced while the engine work is being carried out. Next year, funds permitting, I may change the turbo too.

I will most likely change the water pump and am waiting to hear their thoughts on if the sump kit needs to be chaned also. (Engine work and new parts fitted so to increase reliability and carry out scheduled maintenance.)

So, my question is, bearing in mind the above changes, are there 'upgrade' options as far as the water pump and sump kit are concerned? I appreciate upgrading the sump kit (assuming an upgrade kit exists) and water pump may not be necessary and may be over kill, but if it adds to reliability or means there is anything to gain, no matter how minimal, I am interested to know the options.

FWIW, I will be using the car as much as possible but realistically, this will be limited to weekends and probably 5-6 track days a year.

Not aware of any water pump upgrades available or the requirements therefor!

Not sure what you mean by sump upgrade. There are crank scrapers available but unless you are planning on taking the Balance shafts out the sump / oil pick up is generally pretty good.

Someone mentioned the s2/3l water pump was larger. Not sure if that's true or if that means there is any advantage in having a larger water pump?

You'd only need a larger flowrate water pump if the cooling system was limited in this respect. I've not heard of 951's overheating because the cooling system was undersized, even with a tuned engine. If you do wish to improve the systems cooling capacity you'd make a much more worthwhile difference by fitting a large radiator, with better ducting or possibly faster auxiliary cooling fans.

My advice, spend the money on a better turbocharger...

There is a Lindsey Racing Dry Sump kit.....but I think it was an answer to a question that did not exist. As above, Oil pickup is not a problem is it? and Capacity is OK, and Oil Cooling is fine....? So not sure why a DS kit is required

In the jap modified cars , they tend to use an additional electric water pump ? This gives extra cooling ?
And some cars run the water pump after the engine is turned off ? Turbo Timer or something like that they call it ?
I know that the 944 T has a small pump that keeps running even after the engine is switched off until the engine temp drops .
On the Golf V5 models they have slightly more modern bigger electric water pumps fitted ?
You can pick these up cheap enough and you could modify one of the water pipes on your 944 to accommodate an electric water pump ?
Best sump option might be the Lindsey Racing ! If you can afford it ! Go for Gold

I think you're talking about spending money on shiny stuff that isn't really necessary

A crank scraper would probably gain you a few hp - but so what? There is a place in the US (Ishihara-Johnson? )that makes crank scrapers, but I remember that PSH had a load of issues with them. Dry sumping a 944 is a great idea - for a racecar http://customengineeredperformance.com/. Very expensive though

The oil pickup tube can be reinforced - as Mike mentioned, this is more likely to fracture if the balance shafts are removed (chasing that extra 2hp..)

Save your money for that new turbo..

Based on everyone's feedback, this sounds like the best plan.

The idea wasn't to add HP but to improve reliability. I'm not concerned about cooling or anything else so no need to experiment with parts. Will just get a new turbo water pump.
