Opinions On These 944s?

Hi

I'm looking for a 944, less than £2k, which ideally has no MOT failing structural rust or major engine problems. I plan to teach myself how to maintain it, which will include some bodywork, interior, electrics, engine and transmission work. Therefore I want a car that is not in pristine condition (hence the budget). I've discussed this here.

Has anyone got any opinion on this Biggleswade car? It sounds a good match on paper.

This Southend one car looks really good, but I think it will go for more than my limit.

This Farnham one is also interesting.
 
I do not know the cars you mention but a good early lux should tick all the boxes, you could get one for your budget that does not really require an awful lot barring TLC and maintanance, concentrate more on the bodywork than mechanicals when buying as they are cheaper to put right.

Get yourself to some shows and events, look in the events diary, owners will be more than happy to answer questions and advice.

Get as much advice and knowledge as you can before parting with cash.
 
I think you need to be careful, as you could end up with a money pit. The black one looks good, good advert.
 
I am near Biggleswade so could have a quick look at that one on Saturday if you want. I don't know enough to actually recommend it but could spot the bad bits for you (as I've had to replace all of them on my car!)

The one in Biggleswade looks way too rusty just from the pictures, imagine up close ,i would't go near it.
Seing your budget i would also take into consideration a 924 S ,it's basically the same as a series 1 944. There are 2 very nice ones on pistonheads ,one in Cornwall and one in Hertfordshire both in your budget. Get a good one even if you like tinkering, they all need something.

That would be great! Depends if the car doesn't sell first, auction ends tomorrow. I'm watching it though.
 
If I were you I would think less about the initial budget and buy the best car you can afford (even if its over £2000) as what ever you buy is going to cost you £££. Better to buy one you can own and cherish rather than a money pit which you will end up resenting....

This one also mentioned in another thread needs a full mechanical recommissioning but should have very little wear and tear on it, and if the bodywork and interior as as claimed then it looks like a very good project:

I do appreciate and agree with what you say. However, I do want a car to work on, so don't mind spending a bit less up front if it means more in the long run, as every job I need to tackle will give me experience and knowledge.

That does look a great little car, it doesn't look like it needs much work and will make the next owner really happy. A tad pricey for what I want to pay though.

It does look poorly maintained. The owner isn't around at the weekend anyway, and I'm away all next week, so I doubt I'll never get a chance to look at it. The black one from southend does look smart, and not too far for me to travel either.

Joss, are you still available to pay a visit? It's been relisted. I'm currently working out of the country, back Friday, so have had to let the others slip despite hovering over the 'bid now' button while sat in the hotel bar. The Biggleswade car looks like it needs a bit of bodywork (rust only to panels) which I am happy to tackle. I'm asking about cam/timing belts and recent service history. It's not got power steering though, which is a pain, wondering if retrofitting it is possible.

Edit: Just read some opinions on why the 944 power steering is a leaking pile of sh1t, perhaps I'll reconsider any thought of retrofitting. It would be handy manoeuvring out of my tight rear entrance though (prize to the first witty response)
 
Apparently the non PAS ones are the sweetest handling and to be honest the PAS on 944's doesnt seem to be exactly light anyway, just man up, get down the gym and enjoy uncorrupted steering !
 
Early cars without PAS certainly have a more lively sportscar type feel.

Although I'd like to try an early offest PAS car.
 
hi there , yea no probs having a look at the car , there is no service history , only thing iv done is oil filter , oil , and plugs , and transmission, last owner said cam belt was done about 5k ago, think engine wise its had a good life as no knocks , rattles etc and still pulls well , thx Darren

No SH on the Biggleswade car is a worry, but for £800 it is under my budget and I do want a car that I need to work on.

That would be great Joss, would you rather a weekend or could you do weekday evening? I will contact the seller to see what he can do. Pictures of the bodywork and engine would be good. Any other areas you or others suggest that should be photod for checking?
