It holds the pipe "oil tight" to the union , it is not there for cosmetic reasons if that's your question .

It all depends how bad the corrosion is but these pipes are under oil pressure when the engine is running. If the rear one is bad the other pipes around the oil tank and the 2 that run up the right sill and into the the front right radiator could be bad as well .

hi ian thanks for the reply half of the ring is gone im wondering if i can put i jublee clip round it for now had the front of the car apart when i got some body work done all ok at front cheers

Ray,
The right size jubilee clip ,preferably a stainless steel one tightened up with a small socket such that the plain band covers the damaged area will give you security until you replace the pipe, but it won't be evenly clamping the hose. This style of crimped end fitting is universal & used on much higher pressures than an engine produces, including brake pipes, steering hydraulics & industrial hydraulic systems.
You might even be able to get a new swaged end fitting fitted back on the existing hose providing the hose can be taken off without damage, but then after 10 yrs you may wish to replace with new.
Local hydraulics co should be able to make you up a matching one for a lot less than the OPC price.
Cheers ,
Colin.

Have a good look aorund the thermostat also. My thermostat insert sensor went last year last year and I ended up replacing the thermostat and all the connecting pipes (except the two metal ones running to the radiator benath the sill) as they were all leaking and knackered[&:]

I had that hose replaced on mine at the last service - it was leaking at the oil tank end out of sight. Think the pipe was best part of £200!
