Oil Options

My car currently uses Mobil 1 oil. I contacted the local dealer and they believe I should use Ow 40 for my 964 Turbo. I'm no expert, but this does not sound right to me. Is anyone using this grade on your car or are you using a heavier grade?

Hi Al,

I used to use Castrol Magnatex in my 964 but after the main service with a well respected specialist I was advised to use Esso Ultron which I think is either a 0w-40 or 5w-40.

One of the idiosyncracies of the Porsche boxer engine, with it's horizontal layout and split crankcase, is that thin oils find their way out with extreme ease, and the problem seems to be exacerbated when you add a turbocharger and all it's associated oil line plumbing into the equation - we are all way to familiar with the puff / cloud of oil smoke on cold start up (aren't we?).
The 0W ?? rated synthetic oils tend to be too thin even in some of the more modern 911 turbo engines, and almost certainly in yours. Go with a 10 or 15 W 40 or 50 from a recognised manufacturer.
I use VAG's semi synthetic Synta Black 10 W 40 in mine, having previously used it for over 125000 miles in an Audi Quattro 20V turbo engine, where it performed it's job faultlessly under running conditions that I wouldn't dream of subjecting my Porsche too!
