The oil level in my Carrera 2S has, apart from one instance, stayed stubbornly at max over a period of 2 years and 10,000 miles. Had an oil change at around 2,000 miles and have 2 year service booked for next week. The only time it moved off max was, probably coincidentally, after it had been at OPC for another reason about 4 months ago when it showed 60%. I added 0.3l and the level rose to max following which I have covered around 2.5k miles and it remains at max. Before adding this to the service it would be great to hear other experiences with this sensor.

Oil level sensor

The oil level does fluctuate somewhat dependant on use and conditions.
10k miles over 2 years suggests some repeated short trips that are probably consuming normal amounts of oil, but the oil measurement may not show any drop in level for long periods. This is because oil gradually becomes diluted with fuel and moisture, so the level may not change appreciably. However, after driving at high speed or long journeys, these diluting ingredients evaporate and make oil consumption appear excessive but it may not be. Porsche say oil consumption of 1 litre per 1K miles is quite normal. In practice this seems to be quite a high rate for 992, which usually has a low oil consumption rate.
The oil level should be checked regularly, so it's advisable to get into the habit of checking it whenever you're on a petrol forecourt for refuelling. 1 graduation is about 0.4 of a litre and from lower to upper graduation is around 1.25 litres. But be careful not to overfill!

Clive

Thanks Clive. It does seem that the 992 oil consumption is relatively low. What raised this most in my mind was our recent trip to Europe covering some 1,900 miles in a couple of weeks with no change to the indicated level. Will keep an eye on it as it has an oil change next week.
