You can't check oil (gauge or dipstick) without the oil thermostat open (not just engine warm but during phase the thermostat is open).
Also I find dipstick at 50% = gauge down on red, dipstick on 100% = gauge on 100%. So gauge is 1.5 pints red- to top. Also means you don't need to worry too much about the gauge going down to red as long as you top up before too long.
I fill mine up with engine running, watching the gauge through rear window. With thermostat open the gauge is quite responsive to even small amounts of oil being added.
