OIL GAUGES

Hello ,

How or what is the best method of checking oil levels on myC2 993 ?
pressure and temp work fine but the oil level indicator is in the red ?

The oil level gauge is always an issue as the engine must be warm and the car parked on the level, while idling. A more accurate measure is just to check the dipstick, far less stressful and more accurate.

Car needs to ideally be up to 9 o'clock(normal is 8 o'clock just around the mark) on the temp gauge so that the thermostat in the front wing opens; If you then park on a level surface with the engine running you can check the dipstick and hopefully the oil level gauge if its working. The difference between the top and the bottom of the dipstick(twisted section) is about 3 pints.

You can't check oil (gauge or dipstick) without the oil thermostat open (not just engine warm but during phase the thermostat is open).

Also I find dipstick at 50% = gauge down on red, dipstick on 100% = gauge on 100%. So gauge is 1.5 pints red- to top. Also means you don't need to worry too much about the gauge going down to red as long as you top up before too long.

I fill mine up with engine running, watching the gauge through rear window. With thermostat open the gauge is quite responsive to even small amounts of oil being added.
