I am using this full synthetic Royal Purple, which is what Andy at Promax currently recommends as the best bang for the buck.

I like the Esther based oils as they provide better protection in the first 10 mins or so where all your engine wear occurs, so seems pointless not to have it. My 944 only ever saw Silkolene Pro S 5w40, and not a drop of oil was used. Not cheap but it is about as good an oil money can buy. But as long as you buy a decent quality fully synth and adhere to the servicing schedule you will be perfectly fine. In terms of viscosity I think the manual states from 5w40 through to 15w50 - but let's not get into the old viscosity debate again! Its been done to death.

Porsche recommends Mobil1 0-40 full synthetic for pretty much everything. Supposedly the 0-40 blend has extra ZDDP as per Porsche requirements for wear protection (recall the valve guide issues of 2.7 thru 3.2 flat 6s). I can't confirm the extra ZDDP part but I recall reading somewhere that the 0-40 blend was concocted to meet Porsche specifications.

Mine gets a good quality (Gulf at the moment) 10/40 W semi synthetic, remeber fancy pants oils were not about when these engines were designed, opr am i missing something ?

10/60 millers motorsport, used it for a whole of last season, engine was quiet and used less oil,use it in road turbos aswell.

M1 0W/40 would be one of the last oils I'd use. Even in the UK you get some fairly warm to hot Summers.
There is plenty of good info on that link you've posted to Charles Navaro's site. Well worth spending some time to check it out.

I exclusively use Motul 300V 15W50, fully synthetic.

I would steer clear from any recommendation from Porsche as far as oil is concerned.

A search on here is a good idea; the merits of different oils have been debated to death many times over.

Oli.

Yes Porsche may suggest that 0w-40 is suitable, but empirical evidence suggests that it gets used at a rate of several litres per thousand miles in my late engine, whereas 15w- drops that consumption to a litre every few thousand.

That the oil is synthetic isnt the issue and discussions here frequently seem to end up in that cul-de-sac: the results would be the same if those grades were available in mineral oil.

Strangely, Silkolene Pro-S 5w- fully synth in my older 1985 engine = virtually no usage at all.

Not for the 944 they don't - the grade that is. And Porsche have about 30 oils on their approved list, Mobil 1 just pay them shed loads of cash to recommend them and put that oil in their cars on the production line and at services - what they don't tell you is you can take along your own oil so long as it's on the recommended/approved list. It is a bit like Finish dishwasher tabs and Zanussi! Ferrari recommend Shell oils, Mobil is just one brand of oil.
