How much Oil should I have in my S2? The book says 6 lts and Autodata says 7 Lts. My dipstick is not exactly accurate. SO i am looking for the definitive answer to this question.

Answers below please.

I think I have too much in as it took a huge gulp tonight at high revs. The intake and breather system is now full of oil. Guess tomorrow I'll be draining it and removing the intake etc and cleaning it out.

Series one cars: 5.5l. Series two cars 6.0l. Turbos: 6.5l. All approximate and including filter.

Thanks Simon.

I fear I may have over filled mine. I gave it a bit of beans tonight took it round to the red line for the first time. Huge plume of smoke and then still smoking as I ran back to workshop ( 1/4 of a mile )

The problem I had was that one of my friends in the garage accidentally threw my dipstick out when my engine was out of the car.I bought a replacement on E-bay and it was the wrong one. So I then learned that the stick part is always the same and the tube part varies from model to model. So I bought a new tube from Porsche and fitted that. I then filled the car with 6.5 lts of oil. But the oil level light on the dash was still on. So I put a bit more in and have probably now got about 7.5 lts in there now. So it's an over fill.

The breather pipes are full of oil and the intake seems to be full of oil as well. So tomorrow drain it out and refill with 6 lts and check dipstick etc and go from there.

According to my hand book S2 approx 6.5 litres (Turbo approx 7.0) to include the oil filter. Dipstick check shows this to be correct on my car.

I too thought that the series two cars capacities were higher, but I read them from an owners handbook. I will check against a 1988 Turbo and 1989 S2/2.7l manual later.

Book says 6.5 lt with filter change. I put in 6lt as Simon says and hit top mark on stick. I took the intake off cleaned it and now the car runs lovely with the smoking getting steadily less and less.

Thanks Simon[:D]

"Engine oil With filter change approx. 6 (Turbo: approx. 6.5) litres.
Check oil level with dipstick a few minutes after engine has stopped. The difference between
the max. and min. marks on the dipstick is approx. 1 litre."

Unable to sleep I have had a look through my desk and the first manual that I have come across, WKD 944 020 88 4/87, contradicts this:

"Total oil quantity 6.5l (Turbo approx. 7l) measurement with dipstick is definitive. Difference between max. and min. mark on the dipstick is 1.5l."

I know that there are some mistakes in different owners manuals (transaxle oil capacity, wheel torque conversions etc), but I dont recall this being one.

To be continued...
