i was wondering peoples opinions on whether to keep og sill guards or remove them and leave them off? after a car is painted,,i know that some people thing they are best removed as they collect crap and could cause rust..with my car being painted shortly i will need to decide if i will leave them off or have them re-fitted,,thanks j

I left mine off. They're not fitted to all the 944s and no-one thinks a Lux looks awful without them. [

Yep I left mine off after just having the sills painted. They're old, faded and a little battered and would stand out like a sore thumb if I re-fitted them. Plus they hold a load of crud in that wont do your sills any favour!
If they're in good nick and you really like them, but them on but I'd be inclined to take them off regularly and clean them out

I think so, yes. My car is missing them along with part of the undetray and the car will almost take off at 125mph.

are they easy to remove?
Very easy to remove, just a few plastic nuts to the rear of the sill, I have a feeling they are quite expensive to buy new, I removed them to clean and 'lube' my sills, refitted with all new fasteners from OPC , there is a little 'top hat' type washer that prevents the nut from crushing the plastic, they are expensive at about £2.75 each from memory, I think the whole fitting kit was about £100.
As Frenchy says they can be easily freshened up with a good wash in hot soapy water, a gentle rub with a scotch pad, degrease, light spray with satin black then wipe over with WD40.

The front ones are £100.50 each +vat the larger pieces at the rear are £80 each +vat
with the fixing's and the spacers etc and vat £480 .......just ordered some to go back on my car[
If you want to refresh your old ones then POLYTROL is the way to go[

They improve aerodynamics, look nice, and actually protect the sills from stone chips (but also trap grit which is unfortunate)
on balance, I like them.
I prefer the car without the body colour side rubbing strips, which were dropped from the 968 (although available as an option)
I will be taking the rubbing strips off, not an easy task

They do aid aero and it's very easy to space them away from the bottom of the sills with just a neoprene or rubber packing washer or 2.
Thats's not enough to be noticeable but enough so you dont need to worry about them holding damp against the sills.
As others have said, they spruce up ridiculously easily - even if they are a bit scruffy before you start!
