Offside engine mounting

I have recently bought a 1983 924.
I had my local mechanic give it the once over and he tells me the only problem is that the o/s engine mounting is shot (I have to admit the whole car vibrates like mad even at tickover).
The best price I've found is £119+vat (is this about right - sounds damn steep to me but I'm new to Porsche prices?). He also reckons it looks like a right sod to change - anyone have any experience or advice about how to tackle it?

Yes I was surprised when I checked the usual suspects, they seem to have gone up recently, used to be about £50. In the inimitable Porsche way, it is always the most expensive one that goes too!! Its not the best design in the world (the o/s mount is a spring that eventually fatigues and breaks) and the racing boys quite often fit two n/s type mounts instead. It will be a bit harder on the drive train if you decide to go down that route.

Yes I've changed mine and its time consuming and character building. The hardest part for me, was getting the heat shields off. I lowered the engine on the engine mount bolts down onto the cross-member and manhandled it an inch or so to the n/s. This gives you space to get the new mount back in. Its fairly easy to get the old mount out if it is broken because it takes up less space than the new one you're trying to fit.

I found the published info on how to tell if the mount was broken was vague and ambiguous because unless you have seen/heard it before the vibration could have other causes. Afterwards, I decided the easiest way to tell was to stand by the o/s wing, put both hands on the cam cover and try and rock the engine. Movement = good, no movement = bad.

Thanks for the advice ...
I'll get one orderd and start spannering!
I've only owned the car for 10 days (the latest addition to the fleet) and I want her to become my everyday drive. Once I managed to get my colossal bulk behind the wheel (old Doc Porsche never anticipated people like me getting in these babies) I realised what I'd been missing for years. What a grin factor!! I haven't stopped smiling since.
I'll let you know how I get on ..... don't move too far from your PC will you?
