No spare wheel

Was looking at a 987 and noticed it has no spare all you get is a compressor and a bottle of gunk to fill the hole ..been told this is in order ,there is also no jack so how do you take off the wheels for cleaning etc .I was told you have to phone PA for someone to call out if the tyre is unrepairable ,but what happens when it is out off warranty.
 
Cleaning wheels? surely that's an issue for the small attentive boy who cleans and polishes the rest of the car?

Failing that just use the car lift or the trolley jack in the garage.
 
Car lift ..well that is posh ..looks like it will be the trolly jack and bricks then ,and one of the breakdown companies menbership seems like a must ,

Which is best ?
 
My mate has the same in his Focus ST, no spare, just a bottle of gunk. In the year he has had the car he has had 3 punctures, all non repairable. He has now bought a spare wheel from Ford.

I think it is a poor idea.

You make sure you join the AA (now SAGA) or the RAC or similar and do this.... See photo of the Halling's car during our tour of Scotland. Not much else you can do. And he had to wait 24hrs for a new tyre to wing its way up from middle England as there were no suitable tyres in all of Scotland!

Agreed, Its a real pain. I have had 2x new tyres on mine in 2 years. I left a post on this very subject either here or in general discussion forum about 3 months ago. Gunk is no use if you have a tear. I had to call out Porsche Assitance. Luckily they sourced a tyre to a Kwikfit about 3 miles away and I was sorted about 2 hrs later. Just as well happened on way back from court and not on way ("its like this m'lud..")
 
I now have a Boxster picked it up today ..would a space saver from a older car do to get you home I appreciate you will still have to get the damaged wheel back home and you would need a trolly jack as well,perhaps not worth the bother but could be an exspensive
puncture at £140 a corner .

Why a trolly jack? Presumably if a spacesaver wheel which I have in my 986 fits a 987, a scissor jack will lift the car. Be interested to know why the 987 no longer has a spacesaver. Has the front boot shrunk? What significant changes in the design of the models necessitated a removal of a spacesaver?

I have been told all new Porsches ie 997/986 Cayman have this gunk stuff and no jack,I am going to buy a trolly jack a lot easier and safer when taking wheels off for cleaning ,never trusted those scissor jacks

You could if it was only 5" wide. The 996/986 17" space saver is almost the same rolling radius as the 19" wheel with it's low profile tyre. And is IMHO a better option than the dreaded gunk.
The problem with carrying a space saver in the Boxster is that when used the punctured wheel has to go on the passenger seat in the provided bag. So remember never get a puncture when your missus is on board or you may have to make an awkward decision, her or the wheel?[:)]

That's actually what I meant - the 19" rear wheel will not fit. The spacesaver is (I believe) the same and would fit all Boxster/Cayman/996/997. It is what you do with the puctured wheel that is the problem.[&o]

The 997 has a spare wheel option - it fits on one of the rear seats (!)[8|]
 
[FONT=verdana,geneva"]The real issue is that a puncture means a replacement tyre, because the foam renders it useless. When I ripped a sidewall in Scotland recently (see earlier post) the problems were the cost of recovery and the implications of finding and waiting for a replacement - same make and model, correct size, and of course the dreaded N designation required by Porsche.

The RAC recovery team told me that their charge would have been 'close to four figures', so be without cover at your peril! Furthermore, the wait cost us a day's holiday and an overnight hotel, plus a tyre priced at 'normal' rates!

I'm not sure the 986 spare works on a 987, but in the light of our recent experience I would definately carry one if it did.
