no hot air from heater...

hi,

i've got a turbo s and i'm not getting any hot air from the heater..it's arranged like an air conditioner with temperature control with a sensor in the passenger footwell or something.. all water cooled cars i've previously had have hot and cold on a varying lever..???

any ideas?

Most likely car's air intake temperature sensor is broken. It is located in front of passanger air intake channel (driver side to you) If you have an older version of temp sensor, replace it with newer one, part number starts 964

Could be the vacuum fed heater control valve in the engine bay they normally fail open but could be stuck shut easy to test with a bit of tube and a syringe to cause a vacuum with then if it opens and closes and the pipes heat up it is likely the control mechanism not telling the vac system to open the valve.

I had the same failure and it was the temperature sensor that Oli suspects.

Here is a picture of it sitting horizontally at the top right hand corner of the mesh. It was around £15 from Porsche when mine went (but that was 10 years ago [] ) and it had the part number stamped on it.

If it is that sensor, trawl around on here and you will find details of the actual thermister contained within, which costs about 15p from RS... at least it would do if you didn't have to buy a pack of ten.

One other possibility, and not to insult your inteligence, but sometimes the obvious is so easily overlooked (well I do so often enough!) - the car does have sufficient water and no airlocks? Either will cause the heater to run cold.
